Being a Perfectionist Isn't Entirely Perfect

Being a perfectionist can have negative consequences. It can cause relationships to suffer, cause problems with work and eating habits, and lead to substance abuse. It can also cause feelings of anxiety and inadequacy. Even worse, it can make people who surround the perfectionist feel unworthy.

A perfectionist tends to be all or nothing in terms of goals, seeing everything either as "perfect" or "imperfect." This way of thinking can quickly become overwhelming. It can cause students to turn in papers late, while employees may spend hours agonizing over non-critical details.

Another problem with being a perfectionist is having unrealistic standards. These people may judge everything through their own standards and label nearly everything as "imperfect." While a non-perfectionist may cherish a high score, a perfectionist may be crushed when they lose six points. These people are constantly worried about their failures and worry about being criticized.

Studies have shown that perfectionism is often associated with psychological disorders, including anxiety and depression. It is an unhealthy perspective and can prevent a person from reaching their full potential. It can cause an excessive amount of stress and exhaustion and can affect relationships and the quality of life.

The pursuit of perfectionism is not only harmful to a person's health, but can also lead to negative thinking and unhealthy habits. It can lead to self-destructive behaviors and low self-esteem. It is also associated with increased risk of depression and alcohol abuse.

Although many people think being a perfectionist is unhealthful, it is possible to transform it into a more reasonable approach to life. While perfectionism can greatly contribute to the pursuit of an ideal life, it can also hold a person back from fulfilling their potential.

A perfectionism that is unhealthy can lead to a life of anxiety, stress, and frustration. It can also lead to depression and reduced productivity. Consequently, it's vital to be aware of this trait. It is important to know how to manage it and get rid of it before it affects you too much.
