Assertiveness - Taking Charge of Your Life! So often we hear of how assertiveness is a great asset in and out of the workplace. How many times have you heard that you need to take charge and be "assertive" with people? How many times have you heard someone say, "You are so assertive!"? This is because assertiveness is not only about how you behave but it is also about how you think.

There is nothing wrong with being assertive - in fact it is vital to success in almost every area of your life. However, it is important to know when to use assertiveness and when to back off and avoid aggression. Too many times we hear about aggressive leadership and how it can be a problem. The truth is that aggressive leadership can get results - but if you are not careful and you let it take over you, then you will lose any respect from your subordinates and customers.

You can be assertive without being aggressive or forceful. In fact, if you are too pushy, you will turn people off. You really don't want to come across as overly aggressive or pushy - especially with the people that you need to do business with or interact with on a daily basis. Therefore, it really does make sense to know when to take charge and when to back off.

Of course, sometimes these situations do not work out as you would want them to. Maybe you are too pushy and you are not able to take control of the situation. If this occurs for you do not find a way to resolve it, then just move on.

Remember, assertiveness is not a big deal - it's not the end-all, be-all of leadership skills. You do not need to be completely assertive all the time. Sometimes you just need to take one step at a time and then follow through with the next step. And this is okay - especially in your personal and professional life!

Remember that assertiveness is not meant for everyone; you need to take it slow and steady with the people that are around you most of the time. It can help you grow and also open your eyes to new opportunities that might come your way. It can also help you become more self-aware so that you can take steps in the right direction to ensure your own success as well as the success of others. Therefore, learning to become more assertive - taking charge - can definitely benefit your life and the lives of others!
