I think he can live on his own. Looking at his wrist he is in the hospital (hospital bracelets). He is probably coming off of pain killers and is eager to get home.

My friend had to take him to ER, like Constanza in Seinfeld... It was nothing but he tried his best to convince the doctor he walks 5 miles a day and was in excruciating pain and has had a TRIPLE BYPASS! My friend had to tell Dr the truth, it was a stint a long time ago, and no walking except from front door to the curb to get in an Uber. But you are right he is on too many pain killers etc...
