How to break bad habits is probably one of the first things that people ask me about when I tell them that I have a lot of them, and a habit of quitting before I really begin to see real success. There's no doubt that quitting smoking is one of those that everyone can do and has an incredible number of benefits. So, how to break bad habits? Here are some tips.
Do not try to make a good habit out of something that you already know how to do. The reason being is that a bad habit will get worse until it becomes a real problem. A habit is really a skill and must be broken up into smaller steps. Just remember, if it's too hard for you to do something, then just give up.
Do not start a new smoking habit while you have an existing one. This can cause a chain reaction that will not lead anywhere. Give it a good try and if it fails you will at least have something to work with in your life.
Make sure that what you're quitting is not worth the pain that you will go through to quit. If it's something that you really love, like gambling, then maybe you can't quit all of your other bad habits, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. You may end up being addicted to things that you don't really enjoy anyway. But, at least you got rid of the current bad habit that you have.
Don't feel guilty or ashamed. In fact, I would encourage you to feel both negative and positive as these two things go hand in hand and when they are combined, the best solution you can come up with is a positive outcome.
Take action even if it isn't easy. If it's hard for you to quit smoking or gambling, but you really want to give it a try, then you'll be surprised at the results that you will achieve.
Don't get discouraged if you don't get all the way through one day, because it's always better to try and at least get off to a good start. Remember that all good habits require consistency.
Try to find a good program that will motivate you and keep you motivated throughout the course of the program. I have found that a motivational program called "The Secret" actually works very well in helping me break bad habits and learn how to live a happy and healthy lifestyle.
Don't procrastinate. Don't put off starting your program just because you're afraid of failure.
Stick to your schedule. Stick to your plan and don't just quit on the spur of the moment.
And last but not least, do not forget to reward yourself with something nice once you have made it through the tough days. Remember that you may have been trying really hard, but you are still alive and that you are making progress.
The key to how to break bad habits is that you will continue on until you have reached your goal. It is not going to happen overnight and you won't reach a destination overnight either. But, the payoff will be well worth it.
One thing I have found is that when I am in a room with friends or family and someone asks me how long it will take me to achieve my goal, the answer that I give them is usually the same as the question asked by someone who has been trying to quit smoking for a long time - "I don't know"! This is because when you are in a room with people, your brain doesn't have to think for itself, it only needs to think about what others think.
Therefore, if you tell a friend or family member how long it will take you to achieve your goal, they will be able to see how much longer you need to learn how to stop smoking so they will be more likely to listen to your advice and follow through. I'm sure that you can see what I am getting at here.
As you can see, there are many reasons why you should try and use the tips that I gave you in order to learn how to break bad habits. By using these tips and doing what they say, you can learn how to stay motivated and start living a healthier, happier and healthier lifestyle today!
