Why We All Hate Mondays

in life •  7 years ago

Monday. The single most hated day of the week. A day, the mention of which alone, is enough to make you feel sick in the gut. A day which was most probably designed by sadistic people.

Anyways. Does it ever happen to you where, it’s the weekend and you are either relaxing or having fun with family or friends and suddenly you have this realisation that you have to wake up early the next morning to show up at work because it’s a freaking Monday?

Well, that is sure to bring your mood down and you literally start counting down the number of hours of the weekend that are left and how you will have to go to bed ‘on time’ even though your heart wants to do all these other crazy things!!

So, there’s no doubt about the intensity of humanity’s collective hatred for Monday. But why is it that we feel so strongly about it? I mean we know what we feel but do we know why we feel it? Let me tell you exactly why!

1. It’s A Break From Fun

1.jpg

Monday happens immediately after the weekend. When you get off work on Friday, you have two days of fun, relaxation and not working, to look forward to.

Then you spend the weekend doing things you love the most. Depending on who you are and what your idea of a perfect weekend is, you could spend the days in a million ways.

Some of you go out into nature and have a pleasant time, some of you go to the club to dance all night and some of you spend quiet weekends all by yourself in the peace and sanctity of your own presence!

But Mondays represent a break from all that. It is a start of the week and that could only mean one thing. Work. Now, I know a lot of people love what they do and actually look forward to it, but there are a whole lot who don’t. Hence the gloom.

2. Difficulty Waking Up

Let’s face it. Our sleep patterns are screwed over the weekend as we stay up later than usual and wake up later than usual. Or at least that’s what most of us normal people do. I kid!

Anyways, this disrupts our natural rhythm and no matter how much determination you have, you will most likely find it difficult to wake up at the usual time again.

Even if you do, you will feel groggy and sleepy and uncomfortable and a general dislike for life itself. Also, if you spent your Sunday drinking, you will also have a hangover which will make matters even worse.

And you know what the worst part is? Despite all of this, you will have to dress up, get to work on time and look normal or face the wrath of the boss!

3. Anticipation of Next Weekend

3.jpg

There is a psychological reason why weekends are loved and Mondays are hated. For the weekends to come, you have to go through 5 weekdays but for Monday to come, you only get to go through 2 weekend days.

So, as you are there, working at your desk, you keep thinking how the weekends are still 5 days away and that will just intensify the feeling of being stuck.

Also, you will remember all the nice and fun stuff you did during the weekends and that will make you want to do all of that again and very soon. But guess what, you have to wait 5 more days.

When things happen opposite to what you want, hatred towards the reason is a very natural human response. In this case, it is the hatred towards Monday.

4. The Company

4.jpg

Now, this might not apply to all of you or apply only to an extent. The thing is, during the weekends, you are with the really important people in your life. Be it your family or close friends.

You spend this time having fun and in their presence you can really be yourself and feel totally relaxed. You can share whatever you want to and listen to what they have to say because you actually care.

Come Monday, you have to again spend most of your time with your co-workers. Now, not everyone has irritating co-workers but a lot of people do. Knowing that you will have to be in their presence again can be such a huge turn off.

Basically, you don’t have those special people to look forward to and actually the people around you are the ones you compete with for promotions, or other stuff. The blame though, lands on Monday.

I started it perfectly I think : had my alarm at 8, of course had problems to hear it (cuz hey, Monday ya know) got up super late, like one hour after.
Thanks. From a Monday hater

haha, that almost always happens, I am sure!!

I find it hard to sleep on Sunday nights, I don't know if it is just me or is there something inside that makes us dread Mondays? Couldn't sleep until 2 am last night :( :( ughhhh today was rough to say the least. 1 coffee + energy drink + 2 diet sodas + 1 large diet soda from Burger King later, still tired lol...

Yeah, I know the drill :(

I had always my alarm at 6 and i start with some exercise and then my daily routine of my business and job

It is sad that we only live for the weekends. So our life goes by....

That is deep on so many levels!!!

Thanks.

I Love my Mondays, its my Saturday, my weekend is Monday and Tuesday

Ok that makes sense :D

Don't forget about Tuesday through Sunday, i hate those too!

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? I make a joke, someone replies with a sentence that doesn't even make sense and gets 19 votes in 2 minutes and i still have 0? I'm officially lost.

atleast u got money on this comment. hahahahahahahahahahahaaa.........

Congratulations @sauravrungta!

Thank you :)

Personally I love lasagna, Much more then Mondays ;)

But we are talking about stuff that we hate! :P

Haha literally 😂 But it's a love & hate relationship. My schedule so off that Monday is like "my Friday". So I've got Teusday & Wednesday off, lol but I still don't wanna go up for it. ^_^ Thanks for sharing!

haha really messes with you, doesn't it. LOL.

Thanks for reading :)

For sure 😂 Hah thanks again for sharing!

hahahha....Monday is great day for me.....upvote and resteem for Monday....

think +ve....all of us need to face "Monday".....hahahaha....

Do what you love and you will look forward to Mondays!

yes, that's the case with a lot of people. None that I know, but still lots :D

Its summer vacation for me so im all good :) . I have 78 days until my break from fun! (Unless I decide to get a summer job)

Not all hate mondays. I love mondays, because tommorow tuesday and sunday was yesterday .

Yep, definitely there are people who love Mondays.

1 in a million people love mondays. Guess you're that 1.

haha definitely 1 in a million. But that kinda makes you special though!! :D

I am not a big fan of Mondays either. Here is a video for you and your followers to commemorate the sentiment. Go Boomtown Rats.

haha thanks!

I don't know about you, but I absolutely hate Sundays! Monday is ok for me, even early morning. But Sunday, oh, it's so boring and depressing.

Perhaps it's cause I'm a workaholic with minimal social life :D

What is a Monday?

I was confused until I read that last sentence. haha. I you are a workaholic then it is just the opposite for you.

I don't hate Mondays. In fact, I look up to Monday as a great day for starting off a wonderful week!

You must be really positive person in life :)

Optimism is the key to survival!

agreed :)

Agree! Monday is like a new beginning. You can do anything :)

That feeling you get when your internal clock starts counting down on Sunday afternoon, I've always called that the "LOOM". Personally, I hate Tuesday more.

I get the LOOM all the time :P haha!

We are all steemit bloggers, and so we do not have a working scheudule, so we do not hate mondays, remember?

Most people are still not full time Steemians. But that might change in the coming years. :D :D

So I became a teacher, lots of free mondays each year

Nyyyyyc!!! :D

The way I handle mondays, or any day for that matter, is with a big fat dose of gratefulness. Overthinking everything I'm thankful for removes a lot of negative thoughts and feelings. It keeps my focus on the tasks ahead instead of seeing only the obstacles.

Great post btw! Thanks :)

Gratitude should be the way of life for everyone. We would be lot more calmer and peaceful in life :)

I loved monday, i do what i want on any days, because i o not have to report to the boss.

That's the way to live life!! :D

I found you @thefactsdojo on the live cast! You are a whale! lol

Hey there!! I am not a whale hehe Not that much Steem Power. But yes, lucky to have started making decent payouts :)

Thats what a whale would say...crying laughing

Oh man. I could not disagree more :) I love mondays. It's when the stock market opens. Although the crypto market is open throughout the weekend I have a family I must spend time with. I have lots of fun work to do at home, new clients, new opportunities. Sure, I like weekends, with family-time and whatever, but I'm always excited about a new week!

You are truly 1 in a million then :D

I lived most of my life hating not only mondays, but every day. I changed it :)

While I agree with your post, I also think that it depends on you. Of course you will hate Mondays, if you hate your job. But, if you had the luck to find a place where you go happy, then it doesn't really matter. You may even wait for Mondays to get back to work, where you're doing what you like and you got people you enjoying spending time with. :))

yeah, if you love what you do, then you will definitely look forward to it even if it is a monday!

Thank you :)

I think the biggest thing is that we tend to have freedom, if you aren't working, on our weekends. Then for those people that don't get to do what they love for work feel like they're boxed in and end up wishing for the weekend!

Perfectly said :)

Monday is a hard day! And Tuesday is easier? @sauravrungta

At least easier than Monday ;)

@ sauravrungta On Monday we wake up, on Tuesday we start to live =))

I agree to 100%
I'll follow you.

TL;DR

Because of wage-slavery

Perfect TL;DR!!!
Hopefully Steem can break that, huh?

it will

The system we live in doesnt allow a family or social time, more time should be given for this time...if you had more time off, you'd work harder when you where at work. Partners who work shifts barely get time to see each other and it is us who suffers

That is correct and that is what is wrong with the current system.

I tend to not focus on such negativity.. Monday is a day like any other in my eyes. While yes, we have to return to work and be all serious, we also get the opportunity to excell at our chosen professions. We have the chance to show the world that while there are countless others in our professions we are the pinnacle of those in our field... Not to mention, we will also have something to look forward to come friday... YAY!! another weekend... I do realize though that i am probably greatly outnumbered in this view.....

Wow, that's really motivating! I know that's how one should feel and behave but we see quite the opposite around us.

true... but think of it like this. You can either allow the situation to dictate to you how you react, or you can choose not to let the situation get you to react. That was my point, we all are in full control of how we feel. letting a situation to control if you are happy or not really does impact oour happiness. I just choose not to react negatively...and by doing so i find that i am indeed happier.

I bet retirees don't mind Mondays at all. Thanks for the post @sauravrungta

haha, yeah I'm sure they don't!

"I hate Mondays" we heard in our lives probably more often then... "I love you" and it's still the most catchy name for a movie... ( I know for a fact that in Poland we have one..). I'm not agains Mondays I was born on Monday - so If I'm complaining on Sunday it's about going back to work... we all love to have break from work... it would be perfect world if you could just work 4 hours for 5 days a week. :)

4 hours for 5 days a week? Count me in. Where do I sign? :D

I am always off on Mondays so actually I am quite happy on Mondays :)

That's rare!!

haha it's true

Thank you :)

For me just the thought of having to go to work and leaving the comfiest bed imaginable, is dreadful. I mean, I don't want to get up at 8 in the morning let alone go to work. This thought has ruined the fun of many Sunday nights for me lol.

Great post.

I know that feeling. I know it all too well.

Saturdays and Sundays Kick Butt because I get to spend with my friends and family. But Mondays are cool too, cause I get to go back to the hustle and spend time with my work Fam.

yes, hustle is really important too!

Try to check Eric Thomas YT channel. Can help you lol! Great post

OK will do! I definitely need more motivation LOL

I don't think it is just Mondays, for me, whatever work day starts on lol

hahhaaha, you are exactly like me then :P

Nice post, in my case we must submit a whole lot of reports and do performance review meetings on a Monday - not nice at all, specially when performance targets and budgets were not met!!

Yeah, I read that coincidentally, all the project deadlines fall on Monday making it even worse!!

So true :) great writing

Thank you :)

Ohh like amazing reaaly I vote you plz you interested in nature and tourism visit my page to support me thanks again

I have always hated Tuesdays more than Mondays, regardless of the fact that most of my jobs have been Monday-Friday gigs. While at work on a Monday, I can complain to other co-workers, "Ugh, Monday, amirite?"

But Tuesday. Tuesday feels like a Monday to me, but when you say "Ughhh, Tuesday," most people just stare and ask what's wrong.

Complaining is how I cope. So screw you, Tuesday.

hahaha I guess we all have our own ways of dealing with, amirite?

i go to sleep not wanting to sleep and i wake up not wanting to wake up on mondays .....

It's a daily struggle my friend.....a daily struggle!

So true! Many people blame it all on Monday. That's why I posted something funny really early Monday morning! So that people can have a good laugh to start today with... in the hopes that it will make someone's freaking Monday a little bit brighter...

Thank you :)

If you hate Mondays then the job you do is not fulfilling

Loved this post! It's so good. Seriously. Keep up the good work. :D

Thank you SO much :D

I live off grid. This comment is powered by solar power. I love Mondays. Today I worked in my garden a little. I watered some growing squash plants. I made some videos to upload to youtube tomorrow...all powered by the sun/solar. Monday was a good day!

Yeah, we all do hate Mondays! However, I recently quit a job that I didn't like going to, so my Mondays for now are pretty good! :P

Also, I don't know how I've been on Steemit and not followed you for so long! Probably because I was inactive. Did that now, and a very nice article @sauravrungta! Thanks for sharing :)

Yeah, one's job plays a huge role in one's hatred (or not) towards the dreaded Monday.

Thanks for the follow, I don't know how I missed your blog too...followed back :)

But I try to find something interesting or motivating offered by Monday,..... It lessens the effect of MondayPhobia.

I'd say the majority is about how much you enjoy your job. For those who fight for what they love and only work in that area, there is no weekend. A weekend is just a slightly more flexible time to continue doing the same thing.

For those who need to settle for less due to higher responsibilities in life such as family, bills etc. well, that's where we become imprisoned in that weekend cycle.

Here in East Asia, holidays are often an illusion, cleverly set up. Sure, they give you Monday off for a public holiday, but you'll be damn sure to make it up on Saturday.

Two days off? Say hello to a 12-day week!

But psychologically it doesn't matter because you had that extra little break, even though, looking at it annually, you've had none. The power of routine, eh?

I live in South Asia and I am completely aware of what you are saying. I just don't get this "compensating" of weekends for public holidays thing. Let us have our days off in peace man!!! haha.

C'mon now, Mondays can be totally awesome, turn that frown upside down. See you next Monday, and I'll bet you'll be ROCKIN'! :)

Excellent, glad to hear it!

Lol if you still hate mondays you probably still work a shitty job you hate or are in a relationship that you're over. It's 2017 people!! Every day is the same! Get out there and get what you want!

Good for most of the Steemians, as Monday, Sunday, all are basically same for us!!

Good one mate.perfect to the pin point.

I may be bizarre... but I love monday ! It's THE day for a new chance, a new challenge, a new me :-) Sorrryyy ;-)

You are a highly positive person then! Unfortunately the same can't be said of me :P haha

It's just a mindset. Monday is for me like 1st of January :-) A new day to set up good resolutions :p

Couldn't have said it any better.

If only reason somebody hates Mondays is waking up for work, you shold find a new one. There is nothing worse than in agony waiting for clock handel to make its way from 9 to 5.

This is so true!

We hate monday because it comes after sunday

Exactly!! My whole post in a sentence LOL

i don´t hate mondays, i just hate my job.

That's the number one reason to hate mondays as well!

Mondays are perfectly fine if you love what you do. You might not even know what the next day is. Hopefully, most of you are on that boat.

Most people are not on that boat however. I read a survey which said that over 70% people were not satisfied with their work. I know a small survey doesn't constitute the truth but still that's what we see in life too.

See, you're actually correct. I work with digital products and user data. In "general" a group of 5-7 people speak for the whole group of people we're taking surveys for. I've looked at the data countless times. The first few set the precedent. So if 70% are unhappy (I agree with this data), then that's the data sample I'll take from let's say 100 people.

I dnt hate monday, cos its my life i will always do whatever i love!

Good for you :)

I too hate monday... Keep sharing such amazing posts... Following you man!!

Thank you man!! :D

I dont hate Monday coz Im working on Sunday as well :(

Awww, that sucks! I guess Sunday is Monday for you then.

Good post! I am also not very fond about Mondays. That is why I decided to do a series on Monday Motivations. If you need some motivation to get through Mondays go check out my post Monday Motivation #2

Thank you. Yes, I can't have enough motivation to go through mondays, will surely check it out. :)

Well written post. Surely matches my feelings of hating mondays.
Hahahahahaah.....

Thank you so much :)

Mondays are brutal. Cold Shower, hot Coffee and before you leave for work tell your fam you love them :)

yup, they sure are!

Upvoted and followed

Thanks!

Here is my perspective about Mondays. It is my weekend from the kids, and the busy schedule of running with the mom bus with them all weekend long. It is the break from staying up late until the teens get home safe and sound. So I actually love Mondays, and the best part, is being the horrible mom that has to wake the teens sorry asses up for school. LOL

I see. Mondays are different for you, that's why you love them hehe!

How you enjoy Mondays:
Step 1: You don't.
You don't enjoy Mondays!

Truth!!!!!

If one doesn't like the job, every other day will be as Monday...Passion is the mission tp tackle this issue...

That is rightly said :)

Your post have truth to each word.
There is a fear in a lot of people at the end of weekend, especially if they are on a vacation that they have to go on their boring lifes to earn.
That's why I like our lives. People like us don't have mondays or tuesdays, we have morning and night, everyday feels same...

That's absolutely right. Imagine if one day Steem is able to help everyone escape that cycle and they can just earn by living their lives like they always wanted to! That would be so awesome :)

I hate mondays too, I really do, I even writed something about people hating mondays in one of my early posts.
But even though I hate em as much as I do, every now and then I have these mondays thay really feel like a relief, like if you had a rough weekend with lots of partys it would feel pretty good getting back to the normal weekly routine.

Ah I see what you mean and couldn't agree more. I have had those days too where getting back to normal is actually relieving. Though they are rare! haha

Yeah absolutely! I'm not saying I have those mondays every week, nor every month, probably just a few times a year...

I enjoyed this post and it reminded me of the indelible memory of Office Space, I think somebody has a case of the Mondays;)

I had always heard that most heart attacks happen on Monday mornings so I went looking for data. Here's what I found...

https://myheartsisters.org/2009/06/04/monday-morning-heart-attacks/

It also reminded me that women are our most precious natural resource and we should put as much research,m effort and energy into studying the differences between men and women and how to best work with both sides of the species...

I have spent a lot of time listening to people over many years and one common theme is this (and I know this a tangent before I even write it but....), there is so much focus on male ED (that's erectile dysfunction and decreased libido) and so little focus on female ED and what could be considered dysfunction and why the disparity?? I don't understand it either honestly and here's why. If our women don't have desire, drive or good function, then we need to figure out why and put at least as much focus on why and getting it resolved as we do for the men in our culture.

But, I digress...we were talking about Mondays, well it turns out that most heart attacks do happen between 4-10am Monday mornings. Why??? Maybe it's the stress of returning to a week's worth of working and stress, maybe it's the idea of the weekend warrior coming to a close after approximately 48 hours of speed (or sport) dating, directing traffic for kids and/or exes, decompressing from the previous week's work and already thinking about next week's pile that we didn't get to (starting Friday evening after work and hoping to pretend not to long enough to have a good time Friday night) and maybe get a workout or two in before everything starts again Monday morning between 4-10am....no wonder our society is filled with stress-ridden diseases...it all adds up, how do we reduce this chronic stress, more to come in future posts...

It turns out women are extremely underserved in several other areas such as retirement planning and financial advising (we'll get into that later) and how can it be addressed...

Thank you for pointing out the Monday stigma, I actually like Mondays now ( I never used to) but because of the work I do now and the advent/acceptance of cryptocurrencies I can wake up late if I want or get up early and write my own schedule:) I'm even starting to like mornings (but still not so much:)

This is so true!!!!

Yup it is!!
