“Some of the worst mistakes in my life were haircuts”
― Jim Morrison
The famous 60s lead singer from Doors, perhaps says it most succinctly. We have all had a moment where we wonder what was going through our craniums when we were rocking that style. Was I the same person? Did an Alien lifeform inhabit my body with the sole purpose of making bad decisions? Who knows? However, there is an odd sense of delight deep in side when looking at a particularly poor haircut. I rocked that and survived long enough to relive it. Haircuts, bad or good, can have a liberating effect unlike no other.
A moment in which a thick mop leaves you and is replaced with a short, sharp cut is one of the true joys of life. You feel the breeze. You look the part. These are all fantastic pros of a cut. However, there is also a deeply spiritual part of having hair taken from your body. The truth is humans have ritualised the haircut for thousands of years. It is ingrained in our way of life. As a byproduct, I suspect it has some health benefits that go beyond the cleanliness factor.
The Spiritual Research Foundation explicitly mention a number of reasons for why an association between hair and happiness may be present. Hair is often thought to be a persons crown. Especially amongst various religions. I wonder if the liberation is felt due to the new look or due to some unrelated phenomenon? It is hard to say but something worth pondering.
I will cut this post short due to the lateness of the hour. However, day 4 of the 30 day writing challenge is complete. Thanks for reading and I look forward to continuing this journey with you!
