Real-life Mission of the Month: How I went to Neukölln to officially become a Berliner

Last Friday, I had a real real-life challenge to accomplish: Almost 45 years after J.F.K., I had to become a "Berliner".

Being German, I had in advance booked an appointment at the citizen's center in former "Problembezirk" ("problem district") Neukölln, which, in some parts, has evolved into a hip disctrict by now.

The key to successfully exploring Neukölln is the bus "M 41". For 2.80 Euros, it takes you all along the never ending Urbanstraße right into the heart of the hipster hood. And if you are lucky, you get to watch a free duel of the giants on the way: bus vs. garbage truck!

Once I got out at bus stop Erkstraße, I knew I was closing in on my destination, the citizen's center.

The appointment turned out to be a very strict procedure with an attractive employee of the center, who suspiciously repeated every intel I gave here: "I would like to report my new place here in Berlin." -- "So... you would like to report your new place here in Berlin? hmm..."

After I got the desired stamps in my ID and passport, I took a proud foto of myself...

.. and visited on of the many Turkish restaurants at Urbanstraße. I don't remember the name, but I will definitely go back there in the future, because their falafel plate is the best I have had in a long time.

In one day, I had not only become a Berliner, but also a Neuköllner. Let's see what tomorrow brings!
