What I Learned From My Podcast Guests - Episode 3 - Luke Kondor

in life •  8 years ago  (edited)

Luke Kondor is a talented dude.  He writes books, he is a filmmaker, is involved in podcasting, and you can find him right here on Steemit.  He has a lot going for him and I am convinced that we are going to hear his name a lot in the future.

When Luke appeared on my podcast we talked about his work, of course, but we also talked about something that had the potential to derail everything.  Luke Kondor was fighting a battle with depression.  We're talking full-on, don't want to get out of bed, debilitating depression.

It was clear to Luke and to people close to him that something was not right.  In the podcast interview, Luke told me that he had no idea why he was depressed.  He was (is) in a great relationship, had lots of friends, his artistic endeavours were going well.  That is one of the ways that depression and other mental illnesses are so insidious.  Often there is no rhyme nor reason to it.  It's just something in our brains that happens.  The most successful people in the world that seemingly have it all can fall victim to it.

Luke was fortunate in that he realized things weren't right, and he had a partner who had been through similar experiences herself and recognized it in him.  Luke was able to talk about it with her and because they both realized what was going on, Luke was able to take steps towards overcoming it.

I learned a few things in my conversation with Luke Kondor.  I learned that it is impreative to talk to someone when we think something is wrong.  There shouldn't be a stigma in admitting that something is not right with us.  I learned that sometimes we need to take a little step back from what is currently driving us forward, be it writing, podcasting, running a business or whatever.  One of the ways that we tend to deal with a personal issue is to throw ourselves deeper into our work so that we can forget about what is going on with us.  Sometimes we need to step back and do the opposite and work on ourselves first.

Luke Kondor is doing well in his battle but he is well aware that it is an ongoing battle.  He has to be vigilant and do the right things to ensure that he stays on top in the fight.  I wish him continued success, and if you are going through something similar, I wish you success as well.
