Not very many years ago when I was just starting out on my digital marketing career, an employer of mine threw the words ‘Sink or Swim’ at me and I honestly took them for the literal version not exactly knowing what exactly to do.
Weeks later, with the help of uncle Google, I found out what the statement meant — fail or succeed entirely by one’s own efforts.
I didn’t call upon this statement by my own doing. I was doing content for about six clients and I felt like my mental state was by encroached on, my peace of mind was deteriorating, and my sleeping pattern had taken a sabbatical. All I wanted was to do less work so that I could be on top of my game but my employer couldn’t hear a thing of it — Shortly later I quit for greener pastures.
Now, the choice to sink or swim entirely depends on a person, it is a decision that one has to make at whatever cost however, would you lose your mind and lose sleep over it?
Well as the statement holds a lot of water, it is important for one to know that there are really very many other things in life that are worth sinking for. I am talking about mental health and peace of mind.
You should never let a job put you in a position where you decide whether to sink or swim, you could rather be the captain of your life — although being captain might not be an easy feat, it will give you a long life of peace of mind, and mental stability.
According to me, to decide to sink or swim is like choosing between life and death — I believe that is not a decision supposed to be made by me.
What do you think?
