My relationship with my grandmother was not emotional, it was ideological. I don't remember ever falling on her neck, sitting on her lap. Nor did she ever get close to me.
Grandma had studied till matriculation. She grew up in Mumbai. When we came to live in that house, we used to instruct the children to keep calm and behave properly. When she arrived, my mother used to make special almond juice for her. I liked to tease her by blabbering on like Hitler and Marxism.
I have never seen her worship God. She did as my grandfather wished, and when he died she did not perform any religious rites. she used to go to Central Jail 80-85 years ago to teach women prisoners and read books. She had the thought and the independent intellect and sincere courage to put it into practice.
