Social Media and our Love/Hate relationship

in life •  8 years ago

Social media, should be fun, lighthearted, and entertaining, but I feel like it takes us away from ourselves. Let me explain...

Before we had the opportunity to share our lives, may it be best... or worst day ever, or somewhere in between, we were out living our lives. We found out how an old high school friend was doing , by bumping into them and having the default "I haven't seen you in FOREVER! You look great!" Conversation. We were out finding our OWN paths, and building on memories with those closest to us. If we had a moment of dispair, such as drunk dancing at a wedding (don't judge) that ended up looking like I was coming in on home base.... SAFE!... it was limited to the viewers that were there... it created a memory, by those who experienced it. When times got tough, we would reach out to those who really know what we want and help us get there. Our insecurities faded because we worked hard on building our perfectly tailored lives. It was us, who we are individually and together, in its truest form.

Now I'm not saying social media is all bad, because it's not and I can appreciate and respect the positive side of social media. It brings people together, reaches more people for promoting your ideas, groups, etc., which is all great. But just remember to unplug from it. Comparing your life with another, as wonderful or not so wonderful as it may seem, it's not YOUR life. Never lose focus of YOUR own qualities, that make your path in life yours!

Embrace who you are. If your still learning who you are, embrace the parts you do know and never give up on you, keep an open mind, and smile. Life won't be so overwhelming if you trust yourself and JUST BE YOU!

Too true. I bumped into a friend I hadn't seen for years recently. We hadn't been speaking through Facebook but I knew all about her children and engagement and she knew all about my life. There was very little to catch up on unfortunately so I'm disappointed we didn't hang around to talk for very long.
