We live in a world where we are told that we should all have goals. You know the advice.
Set your goals at the beginning of the new year.
Write them down.
Work on them daily.
Stay focused.
Do all these things if you want your dreams to come true. It’s good advice.
But what happens if you review your goals in the middle of the year and you haven’t gotten much accomplished?
If you’re like most people then you probably get discouraged and disappointed in yourself. And then you quit.
You get so upset with yourself for not following through that you give up your goals altogether. And then scold yourself for “failing” to hit your goals.
Again.
It’s OK…
We all fail sooner or later. Forgive yourself.
And start over.
That’s right, I said start over.
If your original goal was a worthwhile goal and you still want it then you should still pursue it.
Don’t give up because you ran into a delay.
It happens.
If everybody gave up because they didn’t hit every deadline then there would be a bunch of half-finished skyscrapers all over New York.
Microsoft would have gone out of business decades ago and Bill Gates wouldn’t be on a list of 400 Richest anything.
If nobody died because you missed a deadline or you’re behind on your goal, it’s ok. The universe will not collapse.
Just start fresh on it again and stay committed.
Don’t let the calendar dictate your life
You don’t have to wait until December or January to start on a new goal. There is no rule that dictates when you can start (or restart) on a new goal.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the beginning of January or the end of June. You can start (or restart) at any time.
Just get going on your goals at any time regardless of the date on the calendar.
Remember, every day is the first day of the rest of your life. Corny but true.
Action steps
Review your life and your goals today. Decide what goals that you haven’t accomplished that you still want to achieve.
Pretend that you’re starting off fresh.
Make a plan and get started on them right away.
Cool. I like your advice.
