So, in this post I want you to confront yourself a little. Well, actually I want you to confront yourself as much as you can because that is necessary sometimes. This is something nobody wants to do because we are always focused on the outside and not the inside. But let’s change that for a moment, shall we?
Ok, so what I want to discuss about today is bad habits. We have all got them. It doesn’t matter if they are small or big, almost all of us have some or the other bad habits in us. The crazy thing about it is that we are actually aware that they are bad for us and still we do not give them up.
To live a healthy lifestyle, it is vital that we adopt as many good habits as possible like eating healthy foods, working out, meditating and all that stuff and to try to minimize the bad ones like eating a lot of junk food, consuming alcohol or other smoking or tons of other stuff like that. We all know this, yet we continue to indulge in the bad ones quite often. Why is that so? Well, let me tell you what I think.
Peer Pressure
Some of the bad habits like drinking alcohol or smoking are simply a result of peer pressure for a lot of people. They do not actually want to do it, but because they end up being the odd ones out in a group or are simply pushed by their peers, they end up doing it after all.
And later on they regret doing it and promise themselves to never do it again and the same story repeats again. To those people I would like to suggest to stick to your guns and simply learn to say ‘no’ every once in a while. If you do that strongly, your peers will understand and stop forcing you eventually.
It Feels Good
I won’t lie to you. I am a big lover of junk food and I tend to want to eat a lot of them and it takes everything in my power to not overdo it. Truth is, in today’s ‘fast food’ liking world, it is difficult to resist all the tasty delights because our tongues just can’t contain itself and junk food does taste really good. So, it feels good.
And even though, healthy food, like your green veggies aren’t often thought to be that tasty, that is not entirely true. There are a lots of options where you can completely switch to a healthy diet and still satisfy your taste buds and still feel good about what you are eating and not miss the junk food too much.
Habits Are Difficult To Get Rid of
This is one of the underlying reasons why we are not able to get rid of some of the bad habits because habits in general are difficult to get rid of. Good or bad. I think that’s because our brains like the familiarity of it which developed due to our evolutionary process, so I’m told.
So, to quit a bad habit, one has to do put in a lot of effort and I think the brain perceives that as a lot of work. So, there are two negatives as far as the brain is concerned. One, it loses on the ‘feel good’ factor and second, it has to put in a lot of work to get over the bad habit. So, we just continue with them for the longest time.
A lot of instant gratification and brain short-circut building. I agree, it's extremely difficult to get rid of these things.
BTW do you know that approximately only a third of people has positive healthy food related habits?

I am highly addicted to tea. I genuinely need it at least two times a day or else my days feel incomplete. Though my mother regularly complains me on that, it's really hard for me to give it up. So, my point is when we get indulge in a habit, it's really complicated for us to leave it easily and at one go. But, at least we should leave no stone unturned and resist it as much as we can.
