I read an interesting article yesterday that sparked my interest, and made me dive a little bit deeper into what is being deemed "Abrupt Climate Change". The article talks about a Arizona University professor and his theory that our increasing greenhouse gas emissions are causing a feedback loop of sorts, which will cause our planet to warm drastically over the next decade.
The article can be found here: http://www.straight.com/news/868051/could-abrupt-climate-change-lead-human-extinction-within-10-20-years
As more amounts of methane stored in "clathrates" are released into the atmosphere by the melting of arctic shelves, the earth will experience accelerated warming as methane is about 85 times as efficient at trapping heat than other forms. However there are rebuttals to this theory, by some who have reviewed his research and deemed his conclusions are discourteous to the data.
Overall i'd have to say it seems quite drastic to me as well, as the argument is mostly based on the effects of this insane spike in methane. I'm sure many people made similar apocalyptic climate claims when the methane spikes from a growing livestock industry were first observed, cows produce about 70-120 kg of methane each, per year, which is quite hefty with 1.5 billion cows on the planet.
Regardless, I think the message of combating climate change is important, but I won't start investing in my doomsday bunker just yet.
In the next 10 years? No I don't know of any model that illustrates any chance of that occurring.

Agreed, I've heard of 100 or 50 but never 10! Also small world you're one of the few people I follow on here, really liked some of your content like the post on shining light on the blood in your brain. Noticed too your a biochem researcher and i'm actually in my biology undergrad, you can expect to see me voting on your stuff sometimes :P

Study hard, I hope you are considering grad school! Things didn't get real for me until then. It's the first time where you truly get to do a research project and implement your own vision for how it should go forward.
Anyway thanks for the support. I'm glad you enjoy what I write! :D

the concept is that a bunker would do you no good. go underground for 100 years only to pop out to 140F temp and toxic radiation from all the meltdowns of nuclear plants. so yeah, do what you love unless living in an underground food pantry is what you love.
when the arctic goes, it is all over but the nuclear war. no plankton, no fish, no food ... big freaking drama followed by economic collapse and war.
