I always wanted to make my own knife. And as time goes by and I discovered all this interesting YouTube DIY channels, I decide to jump in the cold water and just try to make my own. I ordered a few blade blanks in the internet and buying a few tools to craft my own knife.
I ordered different wood blanks for the handles and starting to grind them with a belt sander. Just quick and dirty to make the rough form for my handle.
Drilled the holes for the riveting and insert a metal rivet all the way down through the handle. Before I insert the rivet I glued all together.
After a few hours I go back to the belt sander again and grind the wood down to where the blade blank beginns in the handle area.
To protect the blade from scratches I taped it.
When the rough grinding was done, I „polished“ all with abrasive paper and steel wool.
Then I put linseed oil on the wood and put it in the oven by 60 degree Celsius for half an hour.
Finished! After my very first knife I learned that I have to care more about the holes for the rivets. My first knife clearly have frayed holes ( first knife in the picture at the top ). After the first one I make another five knifes. The hardest part is to sharpen the blade if you don’t have experience.
So, if I am able to craft my own knife, then probably you can make it too ;-)
The third knife to the right have a Inlay of an stone I collect on a celtic ritual place....this is my favorite this far.
Hope you enjoyed my little project.
I'm proud that I'm the owner of one your great knifes ;-)
