There is a great book by Kate Fox called "Watching the English" which attempts to quantify and explain the class system in the U.K. I know from living in the U.K. for a few years that the number of classes and sub classes is staggering. Also of note, when a Brit (especially from the upper class) meets a forginier they spend a considerable amount of time establishing that persons class and adjusts their behaviour towards them accordingly.
