Starting Out
The company began in December of 2002 By Reid Hoffman and the team members who helped in creating Paypal and Socialnet. They had a period of creation and in 2003 Sequoia Capital started series A investment into the company. They started becoming big and in august of 2004 they hit 1 million users. They continued to soar and in march 2006, they had a month where they made profit. April of 2007 was a good month as they reached ten million users! They created a mobile application of the site in February of 2008. In mid 2008 investors thoughts of the company had risen and other firms purchased a 5% stake in the company for 53 million dollars. The company had a post money valuation of $1 billion by this point. They created an international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland and received more and more Investors putting money into the company.
Getting Viral
Linkedin decided to creating and IPO (initial public offering) and the first shares were trading on May 19th of 2011. The shares symbol was LNKD, and the price of the share was $45. After the first day of trading it went to $94 which was a 170% rise!! In 2012 the company leased three floors of the One Montgomery Towery building which they expanded in 2014. By late 2013 the companies net income had increased by 140%
Where they are now
They announced in early 2014 that they were leasing a 26 story building in San Francisco's SoMa district which accommodated close to 2500 of the companies employees. June 13th of 2016 was a very important day for the company as they Microsoft would be acquiring Linkedin for $196 a share. And the total value of it was 26 billion dollars. This was the second largest acquisition of a company made by Microsoft.
The journey of an idea from incubation to taking birth and then seeing it bloom is so full of hardship, up and down. You need to do a lot of right things and hope your idea survives and gets the support it desrves. Indeed an incredible story.

I vote exchange. A store of value should have an intrinsic use and tangibility. I agree the value has increased tremendously recently and will probably hold, but is still an agreement by all that could potentially be usurped.
