You might be a boss lady in every right; doing greatly behind a desk and killing it in many other areas of your life. But there are some simple tips, or rules, that you just have to know if you are going to remain successful in the corporate world.
One of such rules is about respecting the small people in organizations. Never take them for granted. They know things and sometimes, wield as much power as the man or woman in the big chair. Because most times, they are the gatekeepers- determining who gets an audience with him and those who don’t.
Do you remember the Nollywood romantic comedy ‘The Meeting?’ Rita Dominic’s character shows us a great lesson to abide by in the corporate world. Every secretary, receptionist, and even messenger should be respected. Never assume that it is not their help you want and so you don’t have to care about them. The moment they sense disdain, you may enter their black book and that means whatever you want done might not get done.
Now, I am not advocating bribe but simply be nice. Respect them and an occasional gesture of kindness here and there is a good habit to cultivate.
This set of people can grant you audience with those who call the shots and often brim with a bank of office gossip. They know what the next big hit might be, who is getting a promotion and who is getting laid off and they might share this information with you if they like you.
They are like the circulatory system of the organization; nothing ever gets past them. As a rule in the corporate world, never disrespect them.
