About Wi-Fi, the site "Mozgochiny" and the recovery of the RJ45 connector

I am a man from the past times. Therefore, to technical innovations, I am initially wary. Take for example Wi-Fi. I understand that this is an advanced technology designed to protect the world from the oppression of wires, for many years of operation, well-proven, comfortable, noise-resistant and protected from hacking.

But from the realization that the data transmitted and received via Wi-Fi by my device is flying around in a radius of several tens of meters and are accessible (including for hacking) to everyone who is within this distance - it becomes somehow uncomfortable. Even direct access to the Internet worries me for some reason less.

In general, although the apartment has a Wi-Fi router installed, I rarely use it. And for accessing the World Wide Web, I use an old, good cable connection based on a twisted pair.

And if for a stationary computer with a connection there are no problems, I pressed the RJ45 connector with ticks according to the color scheme of the wires, connected it to the network card of the computer, and use it, then the laptop is more difficult.

I work with a laptop, sitting comfortably on the couch, so I have to insert and pull out the network connector from the laptop sometimes several times a day.

In this mode, the fixing plastic tab on the connector breaks after a couple of months, and I have to squeeze the cable again using a new connector.

Also for several years of operation the socket of the network adapter in the laptop has expanded so much that even a new working plug in it dangles.

If you pull the cable harder-the connection is interrupted, you have to connect to the Network again.

This is annoying.

I first tried to fix the connector in the socket with the help of fragments of matches, twisted pieces of paper, or pieces of heat-shrink tubing. But this is all a one-off solution.

I tried to glue to the connector broken tabs or pieces of plastic with glue. Did not work out.

And I did not want to disassemble the laptop to replace the entire socket. And now there is no such desire.

This continued for a long time. About three years.

And the solution was simple, cheap and elegant.

Plastic cable ties.

(It will take one coupler with a tongue width of 4.3 mm, a length of more than 8 cm, and a few more small ones.)

004_IMG_9174.JPG

You just need to gently prun with its sharp knife or razor blade of its fixing tongue.

We cut off a plate about 1 - 1.5 mm thick from it.

On the tongue should remain locking tie lock, the thickness of the tongue after the cut is about 2 mm.

As a result, the connector with the broken-off lock and the tie pressed to it should enter the socket with little effort.

006_IMG_8925_8908.JPG

Then we will shorten the screed, so that a piece of 7 - 7.5 cm long remains.

After that, it is necessary to snap the tie into the ring and lightly squeeze it, stretching it by its diameter.

The tongue of the screed will rest against the base of the broken connector retainer.

The ring pressed to the connector should protrude beyond the connector by about 1.5 - 2 cm - for this part we will fasten our screed to the mains cable with the help of a couple of other screeds.

Initially, we fix our screed on the mains cable without tightening the fasteners tightly, so that there is some possibility of adjustment.

The rigidity of the screed ring depends on its circumference.

The smaller the circumference, the higher the stiffness.

That is, it can also be regulated within certain limits.

We insert the connector into the socket, squeezing the ring with your fingers, pressing the tab to the connector.

If you release the coupler now, the ring will open, the tongue will straighten and securely fix the connector in the socket.

To remove the connector you will need to compress the plastic ring of the screed again.

After checking the performance, you can finally tighten the ties of the fastening and cut off their extra tails.

From the first time, this whole design can sometimes not be earned, but after a couple of attempts, a few spoiled ties and a precise fit everything will necessarily work out.

This is not my idea. A few years ago I came across it on the site of "Mozgochiny", here in this article with visual photos:

In the original version, the coupler in the ring is not closed and installed slightly differently.

I tried to lock it in the ring to increase the stiffness and this also works.

If you want, you can choose any of these options.

Maybe I'm one of the last people on the Internet who did not know about such a simple way to restore this connector, but suddenly it will come in handy for you too?

And on the site of "Mozgochiny" there are many more descriptions of all sorts of handmades, both technical and decorative-applied.

This is somewhat similar to the television program "The Crazy Hands", which was on Soviet TV many years ago, in the past times.

So I recommend.

One of the benefits of ethernet is that it actually provides a faster connection than WiFi. Many PC gamers still use ethernet because there's just too much lag over WiFi.

I did not know about it. Thank you.
