Today was like any other day for Ruby, nothing different from the love she always received. Only today it was accompanied by birthday wishes and expensive gifts. The teenager always wondered why she was loved so much by so many at least to her she was nothing special, not in talent, looks, grades or riches. She didn't have too much to take her to the top and not too little to leave her at the bottom.
Maybe that was it, her simplicity in a simple town. The day flew past and Ruby was happy, but unlike other days she was happy it ended. The gifts and well wishes did nothing to raise her spirit as gloom steadily enveloped her and she couldn't tell why.
It was 11:40 PM, and Ruby lay on her bed, a wary smile ghosted her lips as she reflected on the gifts she had received. The only remaining task was to embrace a restful night's sleep.
An hour had passed since she bid her parents goodnight, yet she found herself lingering a bit longer before retiring to bed. Her mind bounced around the room tirelessly as her body struggled to stay awake. Sitting up on her bed Ruby decided to start unwrapping gifts and assigning them specific purposes. Just as she settled into her late-night tasks, a knock echoed on Ruby's door, prompting a sigh of frustration to escape her lips.
"Who's there?" She snarled, but what she got was a harder knock.
"Who's there?" She asked even more irritated.
"Mom?" She shuffled towards the door and dragged it open to a strange darkness. Something was off, but her groggy mind dismissed it as she headed back to bed. She must just be tired.
But before her body could touch the bed, she heard something drop behind her.
She turned around and walked to the middle of the room where an unknown object had fallen.
Threading cautiously, Ruby picked up the object.
'You have to do something'
A voice whooshed past her ear, causing a tingle in her spine. She looked around, sweat forming on her forehead.
The object she held was a very old locket with a chain attached to it. The cold locket bit into her skin as she sat on her bed. Opening the strange object Ruby examined it cautiously.
On the inside of the locket, there was a carved symbol. A square with four triangles on its four sides and four smaller ones on its edges.
Ruby glared at the object that seemed to have fallen out of nowhere, more stunned than earlier and took a deep breath.
She looked around the room like it belonged to a stranger as fear crept into her bones. A violent shake of her head was enough to disperse the thought once and she dropped the object on her desk.
Ruby laid back on her bed, dog tired, ignoring the voice, too faint to be real. It might just have been her mind, reading the wrong meaning to everything.
Sleep didn't come easy to her. She tossed and turned helpless to the powerful fear dancing in her heart.
"Don't be paranoid." She whispered to herself.
'It shouldn't seem stranger than I want it to be.' Ruby thought as she turned off her lamp and slammed back onto her bed.
Ruby heard a creak beneath her bed, her closing eyes flew awake and widened to the darkness in her room. The creak continued as Ruby lay frozen, holding her blanket tightly to her chest. Her bed slowly began moving making loud noises as it went.
Ruby was so frightened, that she thought she had already started dreaming. She tried to feel for her lamp, but it was not there.
Suddenly the bed moved backwards, hitting the wall and sending Ruby into panic.
She once again felt for her lamp and tried switching it on but the lamp didn't go on. Fear didn't allow the petrified girl to get off the bed and once again the bed sped forward. Ruby found herself laying again and this time the bed began to turn, getting faster with each passing second.
"Dad!!" She couldn't help but cry out at this horror.
Ruby hid under her blanket, hoping the horror would end, but it continued.
'Can't they hear what's happening?' She questioned, with a disoriented mind.
She slowly became unconscious, and even if the room was lit up, she wouldn't see anything.
Her head spiked with pain, and she lost the feel of her body.
The loud creaks from beneath her bed were now very faint, till she couldn't hear the noises anymore.
'You have to help my people'.
It stopped abruptly, almost throwing the lifeless girl off it. Then it returned to its former position.
Ruby lay lifeless on her bed, getting a semblance of the desperately desired sleep.
