Why I Don’t Have a Home… And Loving it!!

in lifestyle •  8 years ago

Well, at first let me clarify - I am not homeless. At least I hope I don’t look like I am :)

Actually I am living in a lovely apartment in NYC area with a beautiful view over Lady Liberty.

But I don’t call this place home. As well as I didn’t call home my previous 6 apartments that I have changed in the last 6 years. So counting my current residence - on average less than a year in every apartment, spread over 3 countries.

Why am I telling all that here?

Because I wanna share my experience of how great it is NOT to have a place called home! :)

In one of my previous posts here I have told the story about how I got rid of 80% of my ridiculously big fashion wardrobe. It was just the beginning of the new lifestyle that I absolutely loved.

Now I have the minimum stuff I need at home. At this stuff can be as expensive as I can bear. But it should be absolutely minimum.

Believe me, I can cook almost EVERYTHING in my kitchen with just one pan and a pot. If I can’t cook something very special - I go to the restaurant. And I don’t need an asparagus cutter and cheese slicer - I have made a fantastic discovery that a knife works pretty much for everything!

Very often I hear stories from my friends how they killed themselves and everybody around them spending a MONTH choosing a Perfect color for the walls in their new bathroom.

When I think about it, I feel like there are SO MANY other things that you can spend your time on and it brings you so much more value!

Well, there is an exception for it, and it is when you really enjoy the process. But I have NEVER heard any of my friends enjoying it :) Most of them probably enjoy the results, but none of them enjoy spending hours and days choosing endless refurbishment supplies and arguing with the workers.

So why is it implied that we all have to do it?

Why should a REAL man have a garage full of useless tools in case he needs to build a spaceship one day?

Why should a REAL woman have a kitchen full of some crazy gadgets, looking like torture machines?

Why is that calling a place a home is a synonym to stuffing it with tons of things?

I have found so much place in my life when I got rid of all this stuff and focused on what I really like. And this is exploring art, traveling, reading books, running - whatever it is, it is not spending hours on choosing a teapot perfectly matching my tablecloth!

And it doesn’t mean I live in an ugly world. I just prefer someone else to take care of it, so that I take care of what’s important for me. There are plenty of apartments on the market which are really nice and cozy, and I don’t need it to be MY way, I just need it to be good!

But I do need some little spots of my life in my new places when I move. That’s why I always bring over my crockery set, which I chose to be pure white to match any apartment :)

And another secret, that I share only with Steemit - my little friend Mole. He travels with me everywhere!

Some people have told me that it will all change when I have a family. I remember a friend of mine told me that every woman has a “nesting period” (I loved this expression) :)

I have a family, and I was waiting for this period to start, but I never happened. We enjoy moving places together!

And everywhere I move becomes my new home, as long as I have my family with me.

Well, my family, my white coffee cups and a Mole.

It's excellently put, but I'd say the point is not doing the same thing you do. I know quite a lot of people who would feel miserable if they moved all the time and woke up in the apartment that had just white walls and not much else. I think it's about finding what you actually like in life and getting rid of the stuff that prevents you from doing it. There are plenty of people who need a nice and cozy home to enjoy life and probably many women who actually love using all these torture devices in the kitchen - and there is nothing wrong with either of them. You just need to be honest with yourself at some point in life and start living the way you like. And it would look different for everyone. Although I have to agree that wasting a month on choosing a teapot is ridiculous by any scale;))

I cannot agree more - I think you got my point! I'm sharing my recipe for feeling happier and finding better version of myself. And there are plenty of other ways, which I might not have ever come across! I'm just thinking that way too many people are doing stuff that they don't like just because they think this is what the society is expecting them to do...

Beautiful article. Peoples priorities are completely messed up. Nice to see someone able to step back, be objective, and appreciate what's really important.
