Pain point
In 2018, a referendum took place in Romania, which would let voters express their frustration over corruption. They would have the possibility to vote against some legislations encouraging corruption. Speculators were saying that Romanians living in foreign countries were expected to vote against the new legislation. So in order to stop them from voting, the voting sections were understaffed and unprepared: not enough stamps available, not enough staff to take care of the voters, etc. As a result, thousands of people queuing for hours did not get the chance to vote.
How could this pain point be reduced or eliminated with the help of blockchain?
Digitalize the voting and have a blockchain based database for collecting the votes. Once the voting process is digitalized, authorities will not be able to use the limited number of stamps or voting sections as an excuse in order to stop people from voting and influencing the results. Moreover, in this transparent way, no votes can get 'lost' nor could the polls be manipulated, eliminating the risk of corruption.
