The New Testament teaches, among other things, that Jesus personifies the light of God, Jesus is the "son of man": "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" John 8:12.
The light, a perfection of God, metaphorically in the gospels represents the knowledge that allows men to make assertive decisions in life. In other words, the light is the wisdom of God that illuminates the reason of men. Wisdom is the knowledge of the correct means to live, it is also the science of ultimate and first causes. And wisdom can be compared to light because wisdom, due to its progressiveness and expansiveness, allows decisions that ensure man's path toward happiness, prosperity, and the common good. And furthermore, the lack of this wisdom, personified in Christ, in man's path can be compared to a dark path because without wisdom, destructive unforeseen events appear, the famous "stumbling stones" of the gospels. The sin, beyond any calculation, leads men down a path of unpredictable and uncertain consequences.
The apostle John in his first epistle delved into this personification of Jesus as the light that illuminates the world, and that makes men live together as brothers among themselves, with these words the apostle exhorted the first Christians to follow the spiritual light:
"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin" 1 John 1:5-7.
