The Blue Birds have Arrived!!! Our insect control on the Homestead is half here now.

On our farm we have put up about 200 blue bird and swallow nesting boxes. While I do love seeing wild birds, we did not invest all this time and money into 200 boxes just so we could have birds to watch. Like everything else on our homestead/farm the blue birds and swallows have to work to pay rent for their nesting box.

The first year we moved to the homestead we only had about 60 head of cattle and that first spring/summer every one of them got pinkeye. Pinkeye is a nasty infection that cattle can get in there eyes. It is spread by flies landing on the cattle’s face and eyes. It is nasty infection that in extreme cases can leave a cow completely blind. That first summer we spent a lot of money on medications trying to keep the pinkeye under control. That next winter my dad said that he had read that blue birds and swallows eat about 850 flying insects a day. He suggested we build nesting boxes and put them up all over the farm. To be 100 percent honest I did not think this would work, but I took my dad’s advice and that first winter we built 100 boxes and put them up on the farm.

It has been truly amazing to see what these birds have done for the fly population here on the farm. We still have some flies but nothing like we had that first year. Last spring/summer with 200 nesting boxes up, we only had a handful of pinkeye infections in the herd. It has made a huge difference. We no longer use chemicals or vaccinations to try and control the flies or the pinkeye, we let nature take care of it.

There are all kinds of plans for bird boxes out on the internet. We have tried a few different styles. They all seem to work just fine. Ours are not fancy at all, they are very basic. We use hemlock lumber because it is cheap here in Kentucky. It costs us $1.97 for each house we build. In comparison it cost us about $400 dollars to treat the whole cow herd with chemical fly control. We no longer use any chemicals. These bird boxes have paid for themselves multiple times already.

An added bonus is we have an incredible amount of beautiful birds around the farm. Today while I was moving hay was the first time I saw the blue birds back. The swallows should be back soon as well. These birds work extremely hard at catching flies and in return we give them a nice safe warm place to raise their young. It is most definitely a win-win combination for us and for the birds. If you have a small or large homestead I would highly recommend building some bird boxes then sit back and enjoy the show!!!

Working with nature is always best. You can't fight nature!
I also installed 20 bird houses, we didn't have huge problems here in Poland. The winters get to cold for many bugs, but one year the winter was soft and the mosquitoes completely destroyed the summer!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Is there a lot of agricultura in Poland?

Most of the country! It's a huge country with only 30million people. So lots of space.

I love blue birds and I see them in our yard all the time in the summer, I've been meaning to put up some boxes, thanks for the reminder!

You are welcome. Think maybe we should but some silver on the boxes. Might attract more ;)

Great idea and most importantly environmentally friendly

Yes it has worked better than i could have imagined.

Sweet! Definitely going to look into these. Sounds like a great project for my 8 & 11 year olds! Also going to look into bat boxes to tackle the mosquitoes. We have a river at the edge of our property and some marshy areas so the skeeters are terrible up here!

My sons are 6 and 9. They love making the boxes. We let them paint some of them. They thought that was the best.

Bowen,

I love these kind of stories. I learned a lot and it's a story of success. Things we don't think would work, end out working. Thanks for sharing!

Mother Nature always knows best first class post. Thanks for posting and the update on where the blue birds are this time of the year.

I love it when all of the birds come back in the spring. On my front porch I usually get several nests...robins, swallows and morning doves. They each have a certain area that they seem to like.
I love the idea of the nesting boxes to handle an issue naturally. Fewer flies...your cows are better...and the birds are beautiful!

I agree! Thank you for commenting and reading my post!

WE have flying little nasties called 'buffalo gnats' here, that fly into eyes, noses and any other orifice they can access. Thanks for the idea, I think that we may need to add some boxes for the blue's here!

Let me know how it works out for you. Thank you for commenting and stopping by.

Wow! What an excellent way to control the fly population AND help wildlife!!! I've always fantasized about doing this with bats in regards to mosquitos. We may just do that, one of these days I hope!

Bats are a great idea! Thanks for reading and commenting

Wait...wait..you used a native species to control the population of another native species?!?!? What a revolutionary ides!!! :-)

I know it. Imagine that God has a perfect balance for his creatures we just need to step back and let His creation do what it was made for

Sounds good...let's go with His plan!

We have robins now, and I saw a blue jay yesterday.

I love spring time when all the birds come back. Do the birds stay year round out on the west?

Most of them migrate - all except the crows. We get Robins and a few bluejays in the spring, later spring we'll have killdeers and finches. Oh, and lots and lots of swallows. I use fly predators for flies. They work amazingly. I will look in to building bird houses to increase birds on the pasture though.

Such a nice post.. great work. Already following you and upvoted this post. Regards from Venezuela

Thank you very much. Have a great day

Efficient, money saving, and chemical free... nothing better!

That is what we like. All natural!!!

We built blue bird/swallow boxes just like that growing up on our family farm. It was such a fun activity I remember all too well doing alongside my Dad. There is nothing like seeing your first blue birds arrive back from the long winter months! Enjoy those lovely creatures.
