Plastic bag? That is so 2015...

in livesustainably •  7 years ago

In the Netherlands, all consumers together used about 3 billion plastic bags each year. A large part ends up in the waste bin and another part becomes litter.
Therefore since 2016 the national government has forbidden retailers to provide free plastic bags. You can only get a plastic bag in a store against payment.

The government also wants to increase the awareness of consumers. The ban on plastic bags can contribute to sustainable behavior, for example by reusing a bag.

Nowadays everyone is used to it. People reuse a plastic bag or use a cotton shopping bag.

Is there such an initiative in your country?

What kind of bag do you use?

In Barcelona you must pay for each plastic bag, an initiative of our goverment too. Good article!

What good to read. Hopefully many countries will follow!

Nice post

This makes me happy! Here in the US, some store make you pay for a bag, but I don't think it's a law, at least not in New York. I bring reusable bags everywhere! I will also just carry things out in my hands if no bag is really required.

Good that you do this from yourself. It is a pity that people sometimes only take action if a law is made for it

True, we all need to take responsibility for taking care of the planet :)

I don’t believe that there are too many places that make you pay for the plastic bag in the US. Though there are some grocery stores that don’t provide bags at all and you use the boxes that the food is packaged in once they become empty.

That is certainly a good start. Awareness must grow. if someone gives the good example, others will follow
