The New Steemit Logo is Here!

in logo •  7 years ago  (edited)

The Steemit brand and logo are protected by intellectual property laws, including copyright and other proprietary rights of the United States and foreign countries.

..and it continues:

One may not make unauthorized commercial use of, reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute copies, perform, or publicly display the Steemit logo or brand, except as permitted by the doctrine of fair use or as authorized in writing by us.

So you may need to seek legal advice before using the Steemit logo or brand to be sure that you are indeed using it with the doctrine of fair use.

You could also get permission in writing from Steemit, Inc.

My suggestion is to avoid using the steemit brand or steemit logo completely to avoid possible lawsuits.

I would say I cannot then.

This is an excellent example for the use of the word "pedantic."

Probably.

There's nothing wrong with focusing on the details, but someone who is pedantic makes a big display of knowing obscure facts and details.

I'm just chiming in to say that their wording isn't coming from a bad space. Just basic procedure. It seemed like you were disheartened by some legalese and I'm just dropping by to try to say that I don't think that it's anything to worry about ;).

You are right @matt-a, it is indeed basic procedure and having it dropped this way means we the users are being first protected from legal actions that may happen if we fail to take heed. Like @intelliguy mentioned, you cannot use Nike or Reebok logos for your own works, its outright stealing of intellectual property.

correct @jemai

It's better to set it straight now, what belongs to Steemit, Inc and what is creative commons and belongs to the Steem blockchain.

Over the last two people used them interchangeably and they need to know they are two totally distinct different things.

Exactly so it's like them saying Steemit is a centralised entitiy which is ours. However Steem the currency is not.

Cg

STEEM the currency, and STEEM the blockchain, and STEEM the old blue logo is creative commons, free to use

STEEMIT the light green logo, and steemit the font and brand, is NOT free to use for your own promotional or marketing purposes (just like you can't sell Pepsi, or Coca-cola branded products without getting permission first).

Well ... @intelliguy scared the crap out of me - I cannot afford to be sued by anybody so I deleted my Screen shot. Oh well. I will not share the logo or discuss Steemit anywhere.

Haha, man, it isn't like that! Relax!

I'm FREAKING OUT .... This is what I used in place of the New Steemit Logo - It is Copyright Free. Thanks to @intelliguy ....

hahaha!

Discuss steemit as much as you like.

Just don't make logos with the steemit brand name, steemit advertising banners, etc.

OK - Should I remove from my last post ?

I am confused .... do they want us to spread the good news ? Or keep it a secret ? How do we share the new logo if we can't share the new logo ?

doctrine of fair use allows many use cases of the logo. see it on Wikipedia for more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

good luck! :)

Well ..... I can't afford to take any chances so I deleted the Logo from my Blog post - I will not share the new Steemit Logo with anybody.

"Good luck"? So it's depending on luck if the users are drawn into lawsuits or not? Maybe you give a few examples of use cases to make it clear? The users here show their loyalty to the platform (more then loyalty to the currency!) – and sure many of them would like to use the logo. Like me - I have the old logo in my blog banner, but I am not going to use the new one. Quite the opposite – I will change my banner completely!

I am having a string of bad luck so I will avoid using the new logo.

lol - you nailed it - I have no idea what the goal is of this post - I might just use the logo to see if I get a cease and desist. I came to this post from someone who wrote a post about this change but was afraid to use the logo is his post!

The secret logo of steemit! Very helpful for those of us who still have trouble formatting posts. So glad the time was taken for this change and hopefully it will be explained further soon - after steemfest of course - priorities are to those with the financial means to enjoy the platform and let's keep it that way :)
