i used to deliver pizza outside of san francisco, and there was this one house that intentionally had this bizarre nightmare front yard that had rectangles of concrete and large river rocks with bizarre spacing. the sections of rocks were juuust too wide to step over even with a long stride so i literally had to jump over each stupid section because there was no other way to the front door unless i wanted to risk twisting an ankle stepping on rocks that were usually slippery from the fog. anyway, the middle of the rectangles of concrete had a square of small rocks just like this for no apparent reason. absolutely hellish and i hadn't thought about that stupid yard in months til i saw this haha
Next time you pass by, move the rocks and see what's underneath it. That would be a great way to cover a valve or something that needs to be accessed periodically without using a manhole cover type object.
