Longing

And we bring another somewhat sad word, nostalgia, which comes from the Latin nostalgia, and at the same time this comes from the Greek votog nostos, which means return and algia, is a complicated word in Greek.

The real dictionary of the Spanish academy says that it means grief at being absent from the homeland or relatives or friends, and also defines it as melancholic sadness caused by the memory of a lost happiness. image.png

Before continuing, I want to establish a small difference between the word melancholy, which we talked about a few episodes ago, because they are words that are often confused, since both deal with feelings that have to do with the past, with our memories. Nostalgia is like that feeling of sadness that we have when we remember moments or situations that we experienced in the past. This produces emotions that can be beautiful or can be difficult, moments that have hurt us in the past, such as the loss of a loved one. While melancholy already refers to emotions that are deeper and last longer.

Generally, melancholy can be a symptom of depression, but depression is a clinical disorder that is deeper and more serious, so there is a very fine line that divides them. That is why I make the difference between melancholy-depression and melancholy-nostalgia, although it is complex and difficult to differentiate between them.

We can take as a reference that melancholy lasts longer than nostalgia. Nostalgia is a feeling of remembering those old days and melancholy lasts much longer.

For example, I have feelings and memories from when I was a child, remembering the moments when I played with a bird, with a parrot that we had in an old house. I remember those childhood moments when my mom bought me lots of chicks, and I took care of the chicks and loved them. I remember when she was about five or six years old I used to play with these chicks. I feel very nostalgic for those moments when I was an innocent child.

Just like I also feel a lot of nostalgia for the 80s. I think I have already mentioned it in other chapters of these publications where I refer to the era of video games, the Atari 2600, the music of Daryl Hall and Oats, Off the Touch, Cindy Lauper, The Goonies, all that beautiful time of Madonna and those times that make me so nostalgic and such good moments. At that time I was beginning what would be my youth and learning all the things that would lead me to this moment in life where I am currently and it makes me very nostalgic, but very beautiful and very beautiful nostalgia for those moments, for how I was in the world at that time, and I would really like to relive it again, but I know that's not going to happen unless I get a time machine and go back to that time, although I have faith that the advances of science will discover How to achieve it one day and I can have life to enjoy it.

I hope you have enjoyed this beautiful word.
