This is amusing. As far as I know, Tamil speaking communities call it appalam instead of Papadum so I'm curious where did this name come from..

I acknowledge all derivatives of the word Papadum, for it is know by many names in India. The ancient Papadamic texts do mention that it's origins stem from the Tamil word pappaṭam, which means a thin crisp cake of enlightenment. The specific name Papadum is mainly used in Malaysia, tho the shorter verion of papad is used among the Kanada speakers in the region of Karnataka, India.
