The Great Sphinx is a monument built in the Giza plateau, in Egypt. It represents the body of a lion with a human head. Mainstream archaeologists and historians state that the Sphinx was built 4500 years before present during the reign of Pharaoh Khafre. They base this assertion on the finding of a statue of Khafre found nearby, which it is said to resemble the human head of the Sphinx. They also state that the Dream Stele, erected 3400 years before present between the paws of the Sphinx, contains a name similar to the name of Khafre.

A theory which has challenged the theory of the mainstream archaeologists and historians is the one that originated from the study of the pattern of weathering of the enclosure walls of the Sphinx. According to this theory by Dr. Robert Schoch, heavy rainfall caused the visible pattern of erosion and this rainfall has not occurred in that area of the world for 7000-10000 years.

Mainstream archaeologists and historians are probably trying to connect evidence which is relatively weak to an already established paradigm of history which states that human civilization started about 5000 years ago after we emerged from the Neolithic period. Evidence has surfaced of civilizations that predate the established timeline, such as Gobekli Tepe, which is 12000 years old. Discoveries like Gobekli Tepe, show that an ancient, unknown (lost) civilization is more than possible.
