Lovers' Kiss
[Short Short Story]
The old lighthouse was the only promising place for us to take a quick respite and stay during the night. The tall tower topped by a very bright light which served as a guide or a warning signal to ships at sea boasted unbelievable visibility, permitting us to see any approaching enemy from a mile away. We weren't troubled about screaming fans or kidnappers though. Our main concern was avoiding attention; we had to stay away from any paparazzi and stalker. Checking the area below, I realized that even if an attacker would try to corner us, there'd be enough time to escape, to take advantage of the thick steel cable outside, use it as a zip line, suspend ourselves in midair, and flee to the main road like the Dynamic Duo.
"Hey, Alden, what are you planning? Are you going to jump?" interrupted Maine, grabbing my shoulders from behind.
I playfully grinned but didn't bother to turn to her. She'll only freak out at my idea. "Um... Nope. I just discovered another way out here. We can get to the main road by using that long steel cable like a zip line."
Then she laughed. It's weird because the last time she laughed so hard she fainted. So I stopped her that instant, finally turning.
"Maine, don't you dare laugh hysterically and pass out again!"
"Relax, Alden. That one was fake, a prank to be exact. I'm not gonna die laughing. Go, go, Gadget! Ha ha ha!" She still giggled very strongly after my reprimand.
That's something I like about Maine. She's a tease, but in a good way. And she won't stop her practical jokes. I wish I have her cheerful character. No time for bad vibes too.
"Wait, did you just compare me to Inspector Gadget?" I scratched my head, not sure where she was headed. "Why name me after that half-man, half-robot superhero?"
"That was an expression. Don't be naive, Alden. It's a compliment. Gadget is handsome. More than that, he has a keen mind and a very resilient personality. I wish I was more flexible, you know, just to cope with change."
She paused there for a while. To hide her agitation, she made her most prominent wacky face by biting her lower lip, curving her cheeks and exposing her two large front teeth.
I laughed heartily and pulled her pointy chin to my face. Too close that I noticed her beautiful eyes glowing beneath the ashen moonlit. To avoid her gaze, my stare fell on her kissable lips. Then my heart went wild, doing a hundred beats per minute. It's fluttering so fast now; I could not control it. At this point, I cannot move.
Good thing she kissed me first. Before I could respond, Maine had nudged me. So I just pressed my lips shut, smirked at her, and decided to put her on the spot. "You have a thing for me, right?"
Her cheeks blossomed like red roses.
"I knew it!" But Maine hurried to cover her face with a pink hanky. I could tell she was resisting my probing remark. And I really hated that. So I pulled her into my chest and gave her that passionate kiss.
There was silence when I had wrapped my arm around Maine. She only blushed after that sweet, intimate moment; then she turned her attention to our lovemap.
"Well, we're a real-life supercouple now," she whispered.
"Are you okay with that?" I softly asked without hesitation.
"Yeah. you?" she probed further, then leaned forward to hug me.
To be honest, I had no time to vacillate, but at that point, with Maine's lips still on my mind, I nodded slowly and gestured pabebe wave.
She squeezed my hand, and I heaved a big breath. "I love you so much, Maine." I said gently.
Her grip tightened around my hand again, so I held her tight.
She glanced up and tears welled up in her eyes. "With all my heart, I love you too, Alden."
My eyes lit up the second she said that. And I kissed her one more time.
