Psalm 17 is a prayer attributed to David, basically this psalm is a song where a righteous and God-fearing man, who suffers persecution, requests the help of the Lord.
Most likely this psalm refers to the persecution that David suffered at the hands of King Saul, moments in which David saw his life in danger, but with God's guidance he managed to overcome them successfully until he was crowned King of Israel.
This Psalm, which is fundamentally a plea to God, is a psalm that we must take into account for those situations in which we feel surrounded by enemies and cannot find a clear way out of the problems; the trust or the security in God, more than the simple faith, is necessary if we want to be people who are prosperous and blessed by what is highest and most perfect.
This Psalm begins with an invocation to God:
"Hear me, LORD, my plea is just;
listen to my cry.
Hear my prayer—
it does not rise from deceitful lips.
Let my vindication come from you;
may your eyes see what is right" Psalm 17:1-2.
Then the Psalm continues with an affirmation of one's own innocence:
"My steps have held to your paths;
my feet have not stumbled" Psalm 17:5.
Because God is wise and perfect, and because of his great love, which is the love projected towards all his creation, the spiritual love (Agape), the Lord does not forget the righteous who suffer persecution and injustice:
"I call on you, my God, for you will answer me;
turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.
Show me the wonders of your great love,
you who save by your right hand
those who take refuge in you from their foes.
Keep me as the apple of your eye:
hide me in the shadow of your wings" Psalm 17:6-8.
The Psalm ends with an expression of hope, the wicked will face the justice of the Lord, and the just will see the face of God, through the contemplative life:
"As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face;
when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness" Psalm 17:15.
