MUST BE JELLY

The year was 1946, a hot steamy day in the south. She and her friends decided to stop by the local drugstore, visit the soda fountain, and talk about their recent high school graduation.

They plopped down on the nearest barstools. "Chocolate milkshakes for me and my friends", she told the soda jerk! "Today, I have some good news, so I'm buying"!

Excited, her friends asked "so, what's the good news"? "Well, I just got my letter of acceptance from the telephone office, I got the job as a telephone operator"!

The girls congratulated their best friend. Getting a telephone operator position in this small town was a coveted accomplishment. It meant making big money! Well, big money compared to other jobs in the area!

Giggling and having a good time, they suddenly noticed a group of boys sitting in a corner booth watching them.

The boys were former classmates, except for one. Her eyes locked with his, they found themselves staring at each other.

She blushed and looked away as the boys wandered over to where they sat. Introductions were made and she found out he had recently moved from the next town over.

He recently had been discharged from the army after spending five years stationed in Alaska during World War II.

"Did you say your name is Jelly"?? "Yes" she replied as she blushed again.

"That's a strange name"! "Hummm, you're a fine one to talk", your name is "Scar"!

They had a good laugh over that! "Papa gave me that nickname, when I was heavier"! He always said, "must be Jelly cause Jam don't shake like that"

"How did you get your name"? " From a chicken pecking me and causing a "scar" on my nose!

After more conversation and laughter, he asked her to go to the movies with him.

" I don't have a car, so we will need to walk". "Ok, fine, everyone walks around here". "Not many people drive cars".

One date lead to another, they walked to movies, walked to restaurants, to the overpass for picnics, getting to know each other.

He walked her back and forth to work, walked her to church, anywhere she needed to go, he walked with her.

Finally, after about a year, he proposed. She said yes, so they approached her parents for their blessing!

He was Italian and her parents didn't approve of him. Their reply was...."Well, go right ahead if you want to eat spaghetti and meatballs the rest of your life"!

She did, they married, had five children, stayed together for 65 years, then left this world in the same year.

In memory of Scar and Jelly!

Hope you found this little story interesting! It was fun to write!
