Using Machine Learning /Artificial Intelligence for Cricket Test Match Team Selections

Given that a widely watched cricket match has far more at stake than just a few days or hours of play, it is more than just a sporting event.

Before every match, whether it is a Test Match, a One Day International, or a T20, fans frequently discuss cricket matches and possible teams.

The IPL has opened many doors and introduced many good players as a result of their outstanding performances. These players have yet to prove themselves at the international or national level, but they have the potential to make an impact on the international stage. The IPL has also introduced a slew of new selection issues, such as a larger pool of players to choose from.

When a national team is announced, only players who have excelled at the international level are included, rather than players who have risen to prominence through franchise cricket.

Also, when a team's management announces the lineup for a match before the game, the selections can surprise fans all over the world. Even if they are not players, fans understand why a particular player should have been included or excluded from the team.

Here, we must rely on the scientific method to deliver the desired outcome: a selection policy free of human error, bias, or negligence.

While a captain may be able to judge a player based on a few selection criteria in his head, the captain of a team or the team management will have no knowledge of the many other factors that can influence the outcome of a match in relation to the set of players who may make up the final squad.

A good machine learning algorithm or AI algorithm/model can be built using many measured or partially measured selection criteria and can use a lot of data (Big data). These can include a player's specific performance against an opponent using historical data, a player's quantitatively measured performance in a venue, or a player's weight/fitness parameters, dietary pattern followed by a player, performance in the second innings, first innings, performance at a specific time of day, and many other technical parameters related to batting and bowling, as well as match performance parameters such as how many times a player has won a match for his or her team, All of these variables can be measured, and a final score can be calculated.

When combined with the goal of maximizing a team's chances against an opponent in a venue, this balanced score card technique eliminates the whims and uneven selection policies that are sometimes seen by fans. This will go a long way toward restoring International Cricket's reputation, which has been tarnished by management's politicized or inept decision-making.

" In God we trust. All others must bring data."
