Hard to know for sure. But FWIW, I read French, have read the full French-language version (see below) and see little difference between the two (though the French version is more detailed and extensive). In both versions, Macron emphasizes the need for European "strategic autonomy" and avoiding simple "vassal"-like following of the US line on China. In both, he is vague about exactly what that means, other than building up European energy production and defense industries. The French-language version is clearer in condemning protectionist elements of US policy, including the Inflation Reduction Act, which Macron attacks by name. On this latter point, he and other Europeans have a legitimate beef, and their anger was evident long before Macron's latest comments.
Since the interview, Macron has tried to make nice with the US and partially walked back his remarks. But it's obvious that there are genuine issues here, that it's not primarily a matter of translation, and that he's resuscitating some traditional French anti-Atlanticism. It was bad when de Gaulle did it, and is still bad now. That said, he was at least better on Russia-related isssues than on China. And I said, he does have some legitimate beefs abut Biden's continuation of some key elements of Trumpist protectionism.
