As most people maybe aware the largest octopus in the world live along the north western side of North America but that not the only octopus to dwell in these temperate waters.

Red Octopus-1.jpg

The much small Ruby, or Red Octopus (Octopus rubescens). These shallow water octopus only grow up to 10-15 cm and only weigh a few grams. All octopus can an change their colour and texture, making their appearance highly variable. Ruby's colour can vary from a deep brick red, to brown, to white, or mottled mixtures of the three. One distinguishing feature of these octopus which allows them to be identified is they set of three fleshy eyelash-like bits under each of their eyes.

Finding and photographing these little guys is truly a treat.

Thanks for reading.

great lighting for the shot.

Such a cool species! Smart too. Great capture!

You got to wonder how diffifcult it is to photograph these guys if they blend in so well... this one looks a tad miffed to have its picture snapped.

Beautiful creature! Good shot!

Thanks! The way they change their texture and color and how intelligent they are, is fascinating!

Did you go there ever?

Wow wow wow

My husband got face to face with an octopus on a dive. He won't eat them any more. Looked in the eyes and saw someone looking back... WAY too intelligent to eat!

Good

when he's a little animal I really like him, but he is a big animal, so I can only admire it,
