Injections into both eyes: this week right eye, next time the left

in macular •  7 years ago

Having already had macular degeneration identified in my left eye almost three years ago, I was immediately onto any change in my right eye. Regular injections manage to prevent the damage spreading. The injections are spaced between four and six weeks apart. Sometimes the appointments co-incide and both eyes are treated at the same session.
It is not the happiest of treatments, but the alternative would be unthinkable. My mother experienced this condition prior to any treatment being available. Audio books and magnifying glasses were the order of her days. As long as I continue with regular treatment I will continue to be able to read - and my eye specialist says - keep my writing eye working!
It is a condition which sneaks up on you and I encourage everyone, no matter what your age, to print out an Amsler Grid and stick it on the fridge door. Also recommended are tablets containing lutein and zeaxanthin as tested and shown to assist in macular health. Warning: there are tablets labelled macular this that and the other which do NOT contain these ingredients. I first discovered this on watching "Trust Me, I'm a Doctor." The day after that aired the shelves of the dinky-di tablets were emptied at my usual chemist (warehouse) and I had to hunt down through a couple of shops to eventually find them.
I asked my doctor if there is any more I can do to maintain my vision. His reply that the one thing I must not do is smoke cigarettes. I don't know which component of nicotine cigarettes is damaging, but on that he is adamant. But he does this it okay for me to vape rather than stuff my face with more food than I need!
Enough rattling on from me here.
Do, please do, check your sight.
