Well, this is false. If you, like me, believe it’s a crime against humanity that BILLIONS of humans cannot get a bank account and deserve to be able to SAVE and PAY and BUY things, then you understand what moron Maher does not:
Humanity needs a decentralized permissionless borderless immutable censorship resistant government-grabbing-proof system that allows anyone to buy, sell, borrow, loan, swap, and store value, whether or not the nasty genocidal freaks in the CCP or the tax and spend slimy climbers in the other world capitals or greedy gobblers of financial centers want them to.
Once upon a time the utterly unnecessary financial intermediaries accounted for 44% of all the market cap of public companies in the USA.
Cryptocurrency and related software allows peer to peer transactions, lending, yield farming, smart contracts, file storage, communications, education, entertainment without financial intermediaries or toll booths in between.
As for energy consumption, Los Angeles allowed its streetcars to be destroyed in order to waste energy and it only recently started to bring them back...so they can serve as toilets for smelly bums. No one in LA can chide others for their energy use.
I don’t have an issue with criticism of Bitcoin, but it’s a favorite thing for stupid people to use Bitcoin and all other 8,000 cryptocurrencies interchangeably. Not all people are the same. Not all companies are the same. Not all countries are the same. And not all cryptocurrencies are the same.
