It's Evolution Baby.

There are individuals who come to the internet with a good business plan, a substantial amount of capital, and a detailed strategy for leveraging the internet and maximizing the cyber-enormous age's revenue potential. Then there are those of us who are left.

Millions of people have visited the internet in the hopes of making money, and millions more will do so in the next two years. These hopeful individuals come from all walks of life, from six-figure incomes to minimum-wage workers. Similarly, a newbie-networker can be someone with a long history in traditional business or a high school graduate who knows nothing about the mechanics of commerce and marketing.

I've noticed an interesting trend among online marketers who arrived on the scene without a map and little understanding of how the microcosm of internet marketing operated. Maybe I've just seen my own journey and it makes me feel better to think others have gone through something similar.

In any case. Please indulge me for a few more paragraphs as I lay out what I like to call the evolution of a net-marketer.

Stage 1: Easy Money... Not!

Most people appear to believe that the internet "levels the playing field," or that anyone with fingers and a computer can produce enormous wealth with just a few hours of busy labor per week. It normally takes a few months for this bubble to burst, but when it does, the vast majority of newcomers will perish.

When that dark day of awareness arrives, and it becomes clear that in order to see any results, one must actually work this business, the strong of the networking gene pool grow their working legs and move beyond the cloud of deception. The survivors of Stage One march forth and upward, confident in the knowledge that they have exceeded those lazy sluggards who squeeled and fled at the thought of buckling down and putting in some hard work.

Stage 2: Hard work does not compensate for server fees.

In Stage Two, our post-primordial networkers toil relentlessly through the tangles of website development, traffic creation, email list building, and other arduous and structured tedium. They push on day after day, their behinds hurting from being stuck to a worn-out office chair, and their eyes bloodshot and foggy from the all-night clicking sessions, certain in their impending vindication.

However, they are still not making any money. Furthermore, they are beginning to look beyond free site hosting, free classified ads, and free trial memberships. All of the excellent stuff appears to be expensive, but our Stage Twoers had hoped to postpone any financial investments until they could generate enough revenue to cover such costs.

As a result, another large group of inept networkers has died out. The prospect of investing money in their online business was too much for their frail little hearts to endure.

However, those who are more fitted to the task survive. With a deep breath and a careful examination of their monthly budgets, the Stage Two survivors decide to invest as much money as is necessary to keep their businesses surviving until they can become self-funding marketers.

Stage 3: Throwing money at it isn't going to help.

The golden era of upgrades and paid memberships has arrived. This costs $5 per month. That costs ten dollars per month. Anything having a PayPal button can be used.

Our marketers are no longer dumb beginners who believe this can be done for free. They cruise around cyberspace on a mission to buy their way to the top, buying every ebook that comes down the pike, upgrading in programs they login to once a month, and pushing any purchase now button they can find. They boast, "I'm not afraid to spend money on my business."

A great deal of money is spent. Revenue returns are significantly lower.

Those who have progressed to Stage Three will eventually recognize the foolishness of their current course. Maybe it's when they get their credit card bill, or maybe it's while they're balancing their checkbook.

The cruel process of selection has struck out those without the heart for further trials once again. Countless would-be internet marketers have been sunk beneath the mud of this stage.

And, once again, the small part of the total with the courage to keep going grows stronger than ever. They decide that more than a regimen of hard work and a desire to invest money is required. On the eve of a true breakthrough (they can feel it in their bones), individuals who have so far refused to give up decide that a well-thought-out plan for all future undertakings is necessary.

Stage 4: Plan to Fail, Fail to Plan, and Everything Else

From here on out, plans are being made to cover every potential area of the game. A stringent yet sensible budget is established. The daily tasking system has been fine-tuned for maximum efficiency. Prior to each ad campaign, projections are created, and the results are measured thereafter. The need of tracking, testing, brainstorming, and ongoing attention to the hows and what-ifs grows.

This goes on for quite a while. Until another period of clarity arrives.

A question has been posted...

"Is all of this effort really worth the meager compensation I'm getting?"

Or, more frequently...

"How come I'm still not getting any @#$ percent! money?"

This stage transitions quickly to the next. Many specimens are lost in the process, but due to the rapidity with which Stage Four enters

Stage 5, a surprising number of marketers actually make the leap.

"What the Hell Am I Doing Here?" is the fifth stage.

This is where things become nasty. Stage Five is more of a slog than a necessary step in the evolutionary process.

Typical manifestations of specimens at this stage are verbal outbursts such as:

"What a scumbag bunch of @#$%! #$@%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% I can't believe I've wasted three @#$#*& years of my @#$ percent $# life with this bunch of @!!#$ percent stupid @#$ percent #@!!! and yet haven't gotten anything in return!"

As you could expect, thousands upon thousands of networkers die out during this time.

Those that are able to make it through this critical stage of development will realize that their hard work has paid off. A revelation is formed in the breathless, exhausted aftermath of their well-deserved outbursts.

Stage 6: The Hard Facts

This is a business like any other when it comes to cheese fries. Hard labor, financial investment, and smart planning are all necessary, but they are insufficient to place you in profit.

You must know what works and, to some extent, why it works. The difference between someone who works their tail off for nothing and someone who produces a large, sweating fortune with the same or less labor is real knowledge of the market, methods, and meaning behind the apparent craziness.

Nobody cares how much money we spend or how much time we spend in front of the computer each day. The competition is stiff, the stakes are great, and the only question is whether we can penetrate, deliver, and close the deal.

This isn't exactly what the majority of us want to hear. However, the lessons that are worth learning are frequently unpleasant.

Look for successful persons in this industry and learn what they are doing. Observe them. Pose questions to them. Take down notes. Take in as much information as possible, then put it into practice.
