Let me directly kick in with my conclusion. No one can beat @lynncoyle1 in the 2nd curation league, because it would cost you at least 15 hours per week!
She writes an average number of 490 comments per week and 136,590 characters. To do so she of course have to read lots of articles. And that consumes a lot of time. Time most people don't have or are not willing to spend.
If you are a regular reader of my posts you can now decide wheter you continue to read or that you stop after my main conclusion. I came up with the idea to write this post like this, because I personally really hate to read a very long article with basically information that I would have understood within 1 minute.
The introduction: Ashers curation league
Each Sunday @abh12345 write a post name "the curation" league. This weekly contest contains actually 2 contests. The first one is about getting the highest curation rewards (check out some of my other posts to see how you can win this contest). The second contest is more about engagement. Engagement is all about contributing to Steemit by writing posts, commenting other peoples posts and reacting to comments you receive.
average typing speed of 450 characters per minute
About a decade ago I was able to type with 450 characters per minute. That number was without numbers and capitals. Including capitals and number I was probably somewhere between 300 and 400. I'm quite certain that if you can type that fast, that you belong to the top 3% of quickest typists.
Even if you can type like 400 characters per minute, it will take 341 minutes to type 136,590 characters. Which is about 6 hours. So if you only make it to achieve half that speed, 200 characters per minute you will be typing for 11-12 hours in 1 week to comment as much as @lynncoyle1 does.
Besides the typing time you also need time to read something to react on. 200 of @lynnloyle1 comments are replies to replies. Those probably take a bit less time to read compared to a article. Nevertheless it remains difficult to estimate how much time is spend on reading articles. But if you write about 500 comments I would guess you need at least 5 hours, probably even 10-15 hours to read stuff. So I estimate it takes at least 15-16 hours to make any chance to win the 2nd curation league. And that's based on the condition that you can type pretty fast.
average time per comment
Let's take a different approach. And estimate the average time it takes to write 1 comment. That means most of the time you need to read a post, a comment or a reply to your comment. And then you have to write a comment with an average length of 136,590/490=279 characters. Writing such a comment will last at least 1 minute. Let's assume it takes another minute to read somehting. Then it will take 2 minutes per comment is 980 minutes in total. So with these assumptions it will take 16 hours per week to win the 2nd curation league.
Can you really do nothing else to beat @lynncoyle1?
Based on my analysis you know that you can win by just spending a full work week (40 hours) on Steemit. And comment like hell! Your reward will probably be at least 10+ SBD. 3 SBD prize money from the contest and 7+ SBD should be possible if you write such a huge number of comments.
As I don't have this much time, I wonder if there is any other possibility?
I think there is at least one...........
I don't know exactly what you are implying at the end there @crypto-conom1st, but I can tell you that I'm positive that @lynncoyle1 spends more than 40 hrs a week on steemit. If you know anything about her, she likes to win and she is an wonderful person too. She is also not doing this for the 3 steem prize at the end, Lynn is someone that truly cares about people. And she loves to interact and have fun with her friends like me!
I can tell you that I too probably spend around 70 hrs a week here, and I give away my prize I win every week. Not everyone does this for the money or treat it as a job. I make more money in a day at my real job than I have made here in over 3 months. I do it as I care about the people I have come to know and to help make this place a good support system for real people with good hearts.
I love your analysis and don't necessarily think you are trying to insinuate anything bad about Lynn, but your last line seems to imply you think something negative (which I think you might not have meant)... You might want to correct it or elaborate a bit as it can be taken negatively rather easily!
Have a wonderful day!

@davemccoy,
Thanks for your honest a good reply!
First of all I think everyone in the curation league is doing very good things for Steemit. And I think some or all of these people should get a bigger share from the reward pool. As it looks unfair that other people writing crappy posts get higher financial rewards because the use paid upvote bots.
The whole story is meant about analyzing and number crunching. So it should never be taken personal. But I understand it can be easily seen like that.
My last sentence is hinting towards building a bot that automatically posts comments. Then you just write a 250 character comment ("great post! Keep up the good work! I wonder where you get your inspiration, etc, etc) and let the bot post that comment 1,000+ times.
I prefer to keep my open end. However if you still think I should change it, let me know.
And if @lynncoile1 thinks I need to change it, I will. Without any discussion. So later today I contact her to ask if she read this.

No that is cool... I think it was good just to clarify... I didn't think it was anything bad, but I know there are many that might've jumped to a possible negative conclusion... I know that you know Lynn doesn't post those kind of spam comments, but I wasn't sure what you were referring to... So this reply clears it up perfectly!
Frankly, like I told @simplymike I like you and think you do a great job. So I didn't want anyone to jump to any negative conclusions! :P
And btw, I think you are pretty dead on right about the amount of time it takes... I think Glen concurred with me about the 70 hrs and that is a decent rule of thumb as I did that hard for about 2 or 3 weeks. Was it worth it? Monetarily no.. But for an accomplishment of really engaging a lot of people and making good friends yes!
This was a good article and give it no further worry! :D

I’ve read your comment,@davemccoy, and I read @beeyou’s, and I honestly don’t see where you both get the feeling @crypto-econom1st is talking about @lynncoyle1 in a negative way...

IMHO, I take this article as an expression of admiration of what she is doing. (Please correct me if I’m wrong, @crypto-econom1st)
@crypto-econom1st is investigating the importance of posting versus commenting, and does so in a statistical way. It’s just about facts (unless he agrees with me that the only solution is to take out @lynncoyle1 - lol)

From the little I know from @crypto-econom1st he probably has a plan. He’s been analyzing all this, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he would have figured out a way.
Remember, he managed to be king of curation for I don’t know how many weeks in a row with only 15SP...
He’s thinking of strategies, and that’s what we all lack.
And from a marketing perspective: he got us to interact about what he would mean with that last sentence. Lol
I think it was an excellent marketing move.
@davemccoy, do you really think he meant something bad with it? All the people that do, are just fools (please, @crypto-econom1st, don’t let me be the fool here)

Did you also notice that not all of them were an exact copy? The difference was really, really small.
And even that took me like 1 hour to do so. So to get like a 95% chance to win the league I need to spend at least 5-6 hours. That's why I basically let go of that idea.
I know I could double the comment legth to halve this time to about 3 hours. But that's still way to much effort.
I was just thinking of something else. Do you think you will always find such a trick?

Good analysis. I don't think this is an indictment of lynne at all and this IS a platform for constructive dialogue. If nothing else, you have just highlighted what it takes to win. Clearly, she is dedicated to the endeavor (and so many others) enough to make the commitment to win. Other approaches might produce better results in the end. We can't know until someone tries. However, I do think a bot would be recognized easily. I found you at the #payitforward contest. You were featured by @bengy. Congratulations and I hope you will check out the contest for yourself. re: defense
In reality, you need none, but I thought it might be interesting/insightful to those gathering here on this post to read what it took last week for me to get to the No. 1 spot, and also what you didn't do for me to get there. It was both. If I had not put in the time, I still would not(just added the 'not' because it's kind of important here) have moved past you. So, anyone hoping to take your crown, or in my case, hold onto it for another week, what you're doing in the time allotted is nothing less than spectacular.
I suppose everyone already knew that, but since this is a post about quantifying what you're doing, I wanted to help out.
re: retain the crown
No alterations (it's not one size fits all?). I'm keeping it on a pedestal in a vacuum sealed box under lock and key and heavy guard. Don't really want to be weighted down by it, since I carry enough weight as it is. :)

Absolutely. Just as I popped into the top 3 along with @leeart, anyone else could do the same, and there's plenty of people joining in that I know I'm not aware of yet, so no rest for the weary.

I disagree with this. This because not everybody can devote the same amount of time on the Steem blockchain. Some people also don't have insomnia like some of us do!
I do not to intend to take any credits away from the engagement you all are giving to Steem! You all deserve your spot in the top of the league! But we all most stay humble and remember that not everybody is playing with the same chances. Let's be honest, if you take a step back and look at the engagement of the top 10, they could quantify us as lunatics :)
That's why I did find it important and the sponsor the lucky 25!

It definitely requires time. In my case, more than I will be able to keep up for more than a few more weeks, maybe, unless I can find a way to streamline things a little, get more organized. There might not be a way due to the nature of a global social media platform that literally never sleeps because the participants are all coming and going at different times.
However, anyone who can and wants to dedicate the time can end up in the top 10. I would hope that it wouldn't be such an easy thing that someone who spent an hour a day ended up in the top 10, unless they're really, really good. :)
It's true, not everyone is playing with the same amount of time to dedicate here. My concern there is they get discouraged about what they're doing, when all of it contributes and all of it counts. You obviously feel that way, too, through rewarding No. 25. It's a great thing, I think. It makes the first idea, the leagues, that much better.

Goodmorning @glenalbrethsen!
That's indeed why I decided to sponsor the engagement league a little bit! I know how much spend I do spent on the Steem blockchain, I can for sure understand not everybody can spent so much time to the Steem blockchain.
It is possible that they just don't want to spent so much time on the platform, or that they just can't. With 2 kids growing up, a full time job and a wife, it is hard to keep things in balance. And, although I do like it very very much, my offline life will always come first!
To give the people who are not capable or willing to spent so much time on the Steem blockchain but still do their utmost best to engage and interact, the lucky 25 came to mind! It was also giving @abh12345 some support! He does so much for us, so it was time to stand up and instead of saying that I do support him, actually show the support!
And his idea works! All over the blockchain I do see names for the engagement leagues popping up! And that's what it is about. It is now how much we spend here but how we use it!

I dropped off the top of league 2 and happy to do so! Have fun challenging each other up there.

Well, thanks for the tip. I think it's pretty much consensus around here that all I do is write long comments, but thanks for the free advice anyway. :)
I'm not sure if you did it intentionally or not, but if you were hoping to ping @lynncoyle1 of what you just said, the i is a y in that last part of her username. Like what I just did. 😁

Well, and to your point, because laptops and phones and other devices can go a lot of places thanks to an internet connection, there's no reason why someone can't be enjoying the sun and the breeze while they're on Steemit, or wherever else. And if they're blogging about their travels, then there's even more reason to do it.

I've been thinking about your comment, and I realized that we have a lot of people who live south of the equator that will be in fall/winter as we head through spring/fall. So, I don't know, maybe there's been some folks who have been vacationing all of this time that will actually get back into it because the weather won't be so nice down there. I keep needing to remind myself this is a global platform.
As it is, it will be interesting to see what it is like around here. I'm going to guess that it won't be that much different, except people might disappear for a week or two at a time and then come back from their vacation. Still, bills need to be paid, which means work, so the routine of getting on Steemit when they can will still be there. Weekends could change I suppose, but there doesn't seem to be that much going on now either. :)

I admire that quality, @beeyou. Being as competitive as I al brings more disappointment than victory, and I always have to pick up the pieces after losing another place in Asher’s league. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it is true. How I would like to just stand by the sideline, cheering for others. There would be no win or lose, especially if you support both teams. :0)
Why on earth did I choose the username simplymike - I’m complicated as hell, lol
I think I never played a game for fun in my entire life. Of course I play for fun, but I don’t settle for second place. If I play, I play to win. I was like that even when I was in kindergarden, I guess I’ll never grow out of it - lol

I have my fair share of friends with one heck of a competitive streak. My bff in grade school was the same way too. I think that's an admirable quality to have because it encourages others to do better as well. That is why you have so many out there looking up to you. You are a role model to many newbies and veterans on here.
If ever the day comes that you are not up there in the top 11th ranking anymore..just come chill with me for a while. It really is nice to take a breather. I actually enjoy my steemit time more being on the sidelines.
As for never playing a game for fun..what the heck are you doing with newbiegames then? I think that qualifies as fun. Even my let's talk contests..and that cat one..which is on my list to stop by and see what you and @lynncoyle1 wrote about.

Writing a longer comment is certainly part of the equation, but it's only part of the equation, and it's not what got @lynncoyle1 to the top at all. She does it through a great combination of everything.
As it is, my CL came down somewhat this last week from the week prior, simply because I was commenting more and there's only so much time to do it in.
I don't try to double anything, though, but I do try to answer the salient points. Sometimes there are more of those than others. If there isn't much there, than I either stop commenting all together or I may end up adding some other point, but something that goes with the conversation.
And I certainly wouldn't try to do any of this on a phone. :)

I'm going to agree with your assessment of time spent on Steemit in order to unseat @lynncoyle1, but instead of 40 hours a week, I'm going to adjust that to 70 hours a week.
And that's if she's not on as frequently as she normally is because of attending to her husband, a laptop meltdown or just plain needing to get out and live life.
I say this all, because that's exactly what it took this week for me to end up in the No. 1 spot. Hours and hours on my part, and her basically not spending as much time.
However, while reading a post does take up time, so does finding a post. I don't know how she does it, but I know I don't just comment on every post I see. I'm trying to be more discerning than that, and I would say she is, too. If anything, she's able to comment on a whole wide range of posts that I just don't know how to approach.
So, I am in agreement with you, it's going to take a lot of time each week to unseat Lynn, it's just the amount of time that needs to be adjusted up.
What is the other possibility you have to defeat her without putting in the time? You kind of leave off with that as a teaser. Does that mean a continuation of the discussion in another post?
Also, you've done quite well for yourself in both leagues, especially in No. 1, but you shot right up No. 2 this week. Congratulations.

I don’t find it surprising that someone can spend so much time commenting. This is a great community. Well done to @lynnecoyle1.
By the way, before I read all the comments below I was speculating on your last line and what it means. I thought you could be referring to the amount she earns or implying that there is another way to win. As per your penultimate paragraph.
Allow me to finish the sentence based on my speculation.......
“I think there is at least one.......other way to win the 2nd curation league. That would be to harvest a long list of longer generic comments - which are easily available from steemit itself and then work in conjunction with a robot to post them with human assistance, to various blogs. If each comment was long, and different, it would be hard to identify it as the act of a robot, or spamming.”
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

I was indeed thinking of a robot. My robot would be spamming the same comment over and over. So @abh12345 already showed that he is able to detect such spamming.
You seem to suggest that robots could even be a bit smarter? I'm not sure if that is really what you suggest? Neither do I know of it would be possible as I can't code myself.
Anyways the best thing of this is all the effort @lynncoyle1 puts into Steemit.

Hi @crypto-econom1st. I wouldn't have seen this post if you hadn't use the #newbieresteemday tag. Your name is familiar, top ranks in Asher's curation league right?
If you follow Lynn's blog, then you would know her personal story. People come on Steemit for many reasons. Some want to blog, others want to earn money, and some like the people they've met on here and stay despite the pitiful earnings. Steemit is also an avenue to escape the real world. You can get lost in people's stories and engage with others from across the world and build friendships.
For some, Steemit is the peace and quiet that is needed from the reality of life. So if someone finds commenting on here their escape, why would you spend the time analyzing such a factor?
You should also note that Lynn actually spends time reading other people's posts. If she cares to know about you, then she can spout out some information about you that only someone who spends time reading a post would know.
I know many that are smart with analytical mindsets that will find your post interesting. I'm not a numbers type of person, hate math and statistics to be honest, but that's good you computed some math for us. I do hope that this post was made more for fun & games than anything else.

To be honest I almost don't know Lynn. That's not because I'm not interested, but just because there are to many interesting people to follow. And there's to much quality content. I still need to read like 15-20 articles I have bookmarked.
Nevertheless I think I have learned that it would be nice to investigate a bit further then just the numbers. So I started following Lynn as of now.

Just kidding, @crypto-econom1st!
I saw your title pass by and it stuck to me: I came looking for it to read it. :0)
I like the way you start the article by giving the main idea and then telling the reader he can stop reading because you told him the clue already.
It’s a shame SteemIt doesn’t have visitor stats and heatmaps (or does it??) to see how many people actually stop reading, and how many read the entire article...
Because here on SteemIt, everyone speaks about long posts. I don’t really understand why a long post would be automatically of higher quality than a short post. Writing a long post and keeping it interesting until the end is not easy...
One of the tricks you learn is to postpone revealing the clue. You promise/state something in your title that attracts users, and then you only give that information at the end of your article - just to keep your visitor reading.
I like your approach of turning this around - lol. I prefer short, straight to the point articles. Unless the long articles are written by a very good writer.
Then, back to @lynncoyle1...
I think what she’s doing is amazing. It’s not the number of characters that count, it’s her engagement... she just keeps going, talking to so many people, with such a great spirit.
(The engagement part is true, but I’m lying about the importance of characters. Of course they are important. I am competitive as hell. I can’t wait till I’m fully recovered and will be able to use a normal keyboard again, instead of the ‘one-thumb-typing’ on my phone. Lol. One day, that crown will be mine moewahahaaa)
I wish I was as good with numbers as you seem to be. I like things that can be expressed in numbers, they make sense, but I’m terrible at figuring them out myself. Maybe I’m just too lazy ;0)
Anyway, I’ll be keeping this post in mind for the days I feel less competitive. It will keep me going ;0)
