One American issue that I hold dear to my heart is student loans. I haven't been “politically active” about any one issue like this in a very long time. But I think now we have a window of opportunity to move the narrative on the topic of student loan reform. And given the likely severity of COVID-19's impact on the economy, we need to do something about it now.
Outright loan forgiveness, which Bernie Sanders advocates, is probably too difficult a pill to swallow. But I think we can get a couple of meaningful changes done right now if we indicate to our politicians how important this is. So I’ve drafted a Change.org petition calling for 2 things:
The gov't should make 0% interest on student loans permanent. They’ve already authorized it for 6 months. It would be very easy to refinance all student loan debt right now.
The gov't should provide an additional 18-month holiday on ALL student loan payments, after which loans would be newly amortized to a 10- or 15-year payout window with 0% interest.
I started this #MakeZeroPermanent petition yesterday and, at the time of posting this, it already has 122 signatures!
I hope you'll support this very reasonable cause by signing and/or sharing on social media.
