Manatees often travel along the Gulf of Mexico coast during the warmest part of summer. Scientists don't know much about how manatees use coastal habitats west of Florida. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, recent sighting data suggest manatees are spending more time in Louisiana.
Informative article, I had no idea that manatees moved along the gulf coast like this. I thought they pretty much only stayed in Florida. Maybe this is related to the overall climate temperature rising and manatees able to expand their habitat outside of the warm waters of Florida. In any case, it's amazing to think of manatees traveling hundreds of miles along the gulf coast, I've always thought of them as slow and stationary. Maybe their population will increase with new habitat....
