VW, with or without the space???

I remember the logo on the left, distinctly. All my memories of the VW logo in life have been of the logo smooth logo with the V and the W connecting together forming an X. However, if you look back at all historical records, that logo seems to have never existed anywhere but the minds of millions of people, take a look.

What the heck?

It just doesn't look right to me, and there is evidence of the other logo still existing within this reality timeline.
