Market Friday goes "Into the Woods"

in marektfriday •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see so many different markets and different cultures.

I have been to so many new places lately! Oh! The curiosity that is attached to foreign ingredients, different produce or any product sold. So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

But first, a flower. Always a flower.

The loveliness of you never escapes me
May I gaze upon you, always and a day?

Market Friday.jpg

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

Into the Woods

Bar Harbor, ME 04609

Welcome! Step right in! Everything in the shop is made by the owners in this cozy little village that sets on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It is definitely a wonderful shop and I could feel it draw me in as I tried to walk by.

Handmade. Something for everyone here.

MF7.JPG

Sanwiched in between some of the kitschy souvenir shops that dot the downtown, there is a place. I call it art in wood. Let's take a walk through and see what we can find.

MF14.JPG

I am totally in love. Between the creativity and artistry, It is a must-see-kind of place! Add on the save-the-earth premise, and I am theirs.

Those birdhouses were so amazing looking!

Ribbet collage 3.jpg

Those bowls were made out of a single block of wood. They did have dishes and bowls stacked high in the sky. They do spectacular work! Above all, you have to be excited about their commitment to preserving Maine's natural beauty! I just love that concept.

MF12.JPG

Mermaids and mermaids. One of a kind, hand-carved nautical maidens.

MF22.JPG

Everything for the kitchen. The variety was staggering! Special order of just special to you. If you imagine it, they can make it or probably already have one made. I love the feel of the wood, nicely smooth to the touch, as my hands caress its grain.

MF9.JPG

Fashinable canes or sensible walking sticks - plus so many other things! This place was piled high and there was more where that came from.

MF3.JPG

MF4.JPG

MF11.JPG

Don't forget to give that life-size rocking horse a try if you go there. This lady was having the time of her life. They actually encourage people to get on it and take a ride!

Yee-haw!

MF10.JPG

MF 16.JPG

MF8.JPG

Their beauty is in the craftmanship

MF21.JPG

These sculpted birds were calling my name. They are the whole reason that I stopped there.

IMG_1054.JPG

These makes such a rich statement. The wooden bowls are so versatile in their use.

MF20.JPG

There are hats and mittens and more mermaids. Oh, my! I could have spent hours and hours in there. Oh, wait! I did spend hours in there and hours.

MF17.JPG

Bins and barrels full of little pieces for woodworking.

IMG_1074.JPG

I want to thank the owner, Dominic! He does the carving and is a wonderful conservationist. He does exceptional work and is a special human being.

Thank you for coming along! I had a great time with you!

Wow... beautiful MarketFriday .... all things are so unique and artistic.... very well decorated.... really excellent...Happy Market Friday to you dear ...🙂

Thank you so much! Glad you were able to meander through the shop and had a good time!

I got a kick out of the one mermaid's modesty mittens. I really wonderful looking store full of artistry and craft-skill:) Great share, Denise:)

Hehe! It doesn't surprise me that you noticed. :)

I just love the level of creativity and down-home charm this atmosphere creates. The people that waft in and of there were all green. I like that.

Tip!

Hi @prydefoltz! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

This is a #marketfriday post made by a specialist! The photos are very good and clear, it is obvious that the owner allows and even enjoys the people taking photos in his store. This is civilization and wisdom. It's an excellent advertisement for him. I like wood and all that can be done from it. I need everything that's there. I dream long ago for a mermaid, even wood! Thanks Denise, I'm waiting for an exchange between my mushrooms and the lobsters in Maine. Here is also about this: A Small Market in A Small Town

I'm waiting for an exchange between my mushrooms and the lobsters in Maine Hehe! I got a smile out of that one. :)

There is something so very profound about wood and me. I am not even sure how to explain it, but, I absolutely love it. It's touch, the smell, how it looks. You have dreamed of a mermaid? You came to the right place! This man can carve you one! :)

Most places do not mind you taking pictures. It is the odd person that refuses and usually, they are of a sour personality, so it has more to do with that than anything else.

Okay, let's head over to your place!

Tip!

Wood is special, and I like it too. I would have liked a warmer mermaid but I understood that they are not as sweet as we imagine. So a wooden one thinks it's safer!

Hi @bluemoon! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

I love wood! That place its filled with really cool stuff!

Thanks so much! It really had so many things to look at! I intend to go back again. I really wanted him to make me a mermaid!

Such beautiful woodwork! I just wrote my first marketday post. We seldom leave our homestead so it won't happen often. But what a special experience! Thanks for this fun initiative @dswigle
https://steemit.com/marketday/@buckaroo/market-day-in-colourful-africa

Welcome to the challenge, the best challenge around!

Thank you @bluemoon! I hope I get to contribute a bit more but markets are very far from us.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

My pleasure! Fortunately, this challenge and @dswigle are very permissive and you can post in many ways, even without going to a market. If you want to give me as an example, I'm leaving a few market images and then I'm cooking. I like to cook and show what I do. I think it would be interesting to see this from a farm as well. If you look at #marketfriday posts, you'll notice how different they are!

That is interesting! I have some real markets from my time overseas but it's a few years ago. Will maybe do that. Thanks for the tip

Yes, you can do that.

Thank you so much for participating in #MarketFriday! The woodwork in the store was absolutely incredible and the man, Dominic was impressive in the fact that he was a conservationist on top of all else.

I encourage you to use your old photos to show off a different culture! It is an experience I look forward to! And thanks for joining us! I am off to check out your post!

Tip!

That is really impressive! I love the story behind the story

I always do too! Thanks again!

Oh wow. Thank you so much

It is my pleasure!

But it looks just like everything you have shared is from Ghana.lol. I see the beauty of african artwork in these photos. They are really nice and good to share. Nice one amd l give you some mushrooms today @dswigle.
https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@mcsamm/ghana-mushrooms-and-snails

There are many things that can be from almost anywhere in the world, including Ghana! Yes! Funny how that works.

You did mushrooms? Oh, yes! I can hardly wait to check it out! Thanks so much, Sam!

All the work are included extra art which is exceptional and really done great effort with the wood. The plates are the amazing part there and horse riding is so funny.

I thought the horse riding was funny too! :) But, I will admit to having got up there myself. Just to see. I love handcrafted things. Time spent creating something with our hands.

Thank you for visiting #MarketFriday! Always appreciated!

That is an amazing store, what a treat to take photos there! I can just smell the wood... Love the rocking horse, you really should have given us a selfie - can you go back? Oh, and those bird carvings may be my favourite thing! Great photos Denise, resteemed :)

The bird carvings were actually quite cool. I was mad that I put them up when I was practically sleeping, I had traveled all day yesterday and was tired. I have hundreds of photos. Pfft! Oh, well.

I love these kinds of places, and I do love the smell of wood, the feel of it. Yes! It is one of those things I cannot explain. I did get up on the rocking horse and selfie? Be real! I hate them, and will give in to it at times, but, ok... I will go back and get one. ;)

Thanks for visiting, my friend. You always bring a smile to my lips.

Tip!

Oh, you will go back? Nice! Thanks for the tip :)

Sure, sure. I have been there before and I am sure I will go again. I pass through Bar Harbor when I go up to Nova Scotia.

You are welcome. Don't spend it all in one place.

Hi @keithboone! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

@tipU voting service | For investors.

I love this place. I love things made out of wood. I admire people who can turn a simple piece of wood into something beautiful. I once went to a place that sold knives made out of wood. I bought one and was amazed at how well it cut. Really cool market place. The carvers are super talented.

That kind of creativity and artistic ability blows me away. I am an artistically no-talent half French, half German female. All of my brothers paint or sculpt or something... Obviously, my gene got misplaced at birth. :)

However, I do have a great appreciation for art! And wood!??? Ohhhh! I love the feel, the texture, the warmth... yes. Wood rules.

Absolutely mind blowing Denise, what a place!!! I would love to get me some of those bowls, but I am sure I would find bunch of other things too. Oh my gosh!!! I eat brick en love that brick wall and the whole rustic look. I am saving the website for the future, hopefully I will be rich soon ,lol.

Oh, wouldn't that be lovely??

I really loved that place, Lena. I have been there before and bought some of the spoons and other utensils and two wooden bowls. Also, one of his wooden puzzles and it gave me the idea of making my own. Which I did. :) Jigsaw puzzles were so easy!

I rode the rocking horse, because, how couldn't you, right??

Brick walls are something I grew up with and to this day, I love them. Very New England. When we get rich, we will both take a trip up there and go crazy!

An intervention may be needed. We'll take Judie. Perhaps she will be the voice of reason. (not!) LOL

Thanks for visiting! XOXO Love to you and those beautiful boys.

Tip!

That would be awesome Sweetie, I hope it will be soon. Thank you so much for the tip and love you too. I hope Judith is doing well XOXO

What an awesome shop. I love wood, so I would be lost in there for days! Thanks for sharing this amazing shop.

I know, right?? It is such a wonderful shop, I love it! I love the creativity, artistry and the reasoning behind it all: conservation.

I needed an intervention to get out of there!

Tip!

Thank you for the Tip! It is greatly appreciated.

Excellent post and photos Denise! You go to some pretty cool places and I really love this one also! I see a few things that I would love to have and it is especially cool that they use so much to support land conservation! ❤

That's one of the best things about this guy was that he was a conservationist... Oh, yes. And his stuff really was quite cool! I love to travel and have been doing it since I left home, I make it a point to enrich my life and my kids and also discovering places in this world that are amazing.

Thanks for visiting! Mwah!

What a wonderful place @dswigle. I love that photograph of the bird houses. Very arty! 😁

Did Dominic do all the carving in that shop? He must work very fast if he did! 😱

He and another guy have done all the carving, but, their workshop is not on the premises. I am sure they have built up their inventory over time.

The birdhouses were so cool looking! I took a bunch of them and had to restrain myself from posting them all. :) Thank you so much for dropping by #MarketFriday! I always appreciate your lovely self.

Tip!

Even if they've carved them over a period of time @dswigle that seems like a massive inventory to me. Especially since they must have sold a lot of them.

I love that thy use the downed dead wood too. It's quite an enterprise. 😊

Thank you for the tip. Always appreciated. 😍

I agree with you, but, it is a family business now, so I wonder if they have more working for them. It is still all done by hand for sure.

It is quite the enterprise and I take my hat off to them. The tip is always my pleasure!

Ah. That makes sense @dswigle. They probably have more working for them then.

Have a wonderful weekend! 😍

Wonderful place to find an array of wooden items. Hope they have fire sprinkler system. :-)

I know, right? You are so practical. LOL It really was a cool store! Did you get up to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park or did you go somewhere else in Maine. My dad used to spend a lot of time with us on the ragged coastline, I just love the beauty of it, but,now that winter is more of a menace to me, I only go back up there in the winter for skiing, but, even then, I have found a lot of skiing in Pennsylvania.

Hi, Mike! Thanks for perusing!

Tip!

Tip!

Went to Acadia Park, was disappointed fog on Cadillac Mt. Went up to Campobello Island. Lands end store in Maine. :-) Was a while ago.

Oh, you really missed out because that is a really incredible place you went to, although Lands End was a good deal. I think Sears bought them out about 10 years ago. Pfft. Progress.

I hope you get the chance to go back someday. It is a great place for camping and hiking, not to mention just breathing in that awesome air.

What a way to start this amazing blog @dswigle That certainly is a gorgeous flower. Some type of exotic lily? The wooden products are wide and varied and so beautifully made. Did the place have a wonderful woody fragrance?

It is nice to see places like this still exist. They seem almost untouched with the expectation of trying to get likes on Facebook. Makes you just wonder all the different tools they have between trying to make something as big like that boat right down to a bowl.

My grandfather was very much into woodworking more as a hobby. I bet they have a fun woodpile to dig through while trying to find that perfect piece of wood that speaks to them into what it should be made into next.

It is so wonderful even when they try and mass produces something like those birdhouse they are all different. Each I’m sure to come up with a different problem took a somewhat different approach, and all needed a little extra care somewhere to become a similar but unique looking product among themselves. Just something about a nice good chunk of bark showing though.

Lovely photography…thanks for sharing

Thank you!

Denise, somehow, I always get absolutely glued to your post. I tend to see the photos...again n again...and wonder...You are So GOOD in doing that..."Creating Magic"...since the time, humans...learnt the art and craft...they created some awesome wonders...using wood and metals...!!! Wood was easily available...all around them...perhaps that's how this whole thing would have started...utensils, artifacts, jewellery and many other things n items.... & I loved the concept that they (Dominic & Co.) use dead wood for all these and don't chop down the trees !!! Ahhhhh ! Some sigh !:)

Thank you so much, Denise, @dswigle for sharing such a wonderful n creative post !!!
Much Love!
