In the Koran, there are many letters, one of which is Surah Maryam which in Arabic: مريم, is the nineteenth chapter of the Koran. According to the narration of Ibn Mas'ud, Ja'far bin Abi Talib read the beginning of this Surah Maryam to the king of Najasyi and his followers when he moved along with other friends to the Habsyi country which was the king of the Christian religion.
It is named the letter Maryam because this letter contains the story of Maryam or Mary in Christianity, who is the mother of Prophet Isa Alaihi Salam. This surah tells of miraculous birth, in which Jesus was born to a mother who had never married a man. It is informed that the birth of Jesus was without a father, which shows proof of Allah's power, which is similar to the birth of Prophet Adam without a mother.
The first verse of surah Mary is كٓهيعٓصٓ
These are among the fourteen opening letters which occur in various combinations at the beginning of twenty-nine sūrahs in the Qur'ān. Although there has been much speculation as to their meaning, it was not, in fact, revealed by Allah to anyone and is known only to Him.
The second verse is ذِكْرُ رَحْمَتِ رَبِّكَ عَبْدَهُۥ زَكَرِيَّآ ('This is' a reminder of your Lord's mercy to His servant Zachariah,)
That is, this story tells about Allah's grace to one of His servants, namely Zakaria.
The third verse is إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ نِدَآءً خَفِيًّا (when he cried out to his Lord privately,)
In this third verse, some commentators say that Zakaria actually lowers his voice in prayer so that in this request he is not accused of being weak because of his advanced age, because he asked that he be blessed with a son. That is according to what was narrated by Al-Mawardi.
The fourth verse is قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى وَهَنَ ٱلْعَظْمُ مِنِّى وَٱشْتَعَلَ ٱلرَّأْسُ شَيْبًا وَلَمْ أَكُنۢ بِِِعَآئِيَ
(saying, “My Lord! Surely my bones have become brittle, and gray hair has spread across my head, but I have never been disappointed in my prayer to You, my Lord!)
The intended meaning of this verse is to tell about weakness and aging and their signs, both visible and invisible.
The fifth verse is وَإِنِّى خِفْتُ ٱلْمَوَٰلِىَ مِن وَرَآءِى وَكَانَتِ ٱمْرَأَتِى عَاقِرًا فَهَبْ لِى مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا
(And I am concerned about ˹ the faith of˺ my relatives after me since my wife is barren. So grant me, by Your grace, an heir,)
That is, I (Zakaria) have never prayed to You, but You allow it, You have never rejected what I ask of You.
The sixth verse is يَرِثُنِى وَيَرِثُ مِنْ ءَالِ يَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَٱجْعَلْهُ رَبِّ رَضِيًّا
(who will inherit 'prophethood' from me and the family of Jacob, and make him, O Lord, pleasing 'to You'!)
There are several interpretations regarding this sixth verse, one of which is that Zakaria asked Allah to be blessed with a boy who would become a prophet afterward, to lead them with the revelation that was revealed to him.
