So, I decided to become a Psycho-Oncologist. Not with the ultimate purpose of helping them overcome the disease, that too, but with the illusion of learning their life lessons.

  • The most important thing at the moment is to concentrate our energies in the present and to put the best means in our power to face the disease.
  • Sometimes, due to anxiety and fear of what they are going to tell us, we may have some difficulty understanding medical information: we will ask them to repeat it and explain everything that is not clear to us. Medical language is often unknown to us.
  • At times, the lack of answers will irritate or irritate doctors. We must understand that they can not give us the certainty that we want at the time we want and that it is necessary to take some time to observe the evolution of the child and his response to treatment. Normally, after the first few days everything will be seen more clearly and answers will be found.
  • The more supportive family, friends or other parents who have gone through the same situation, the better. Let's avoid isolation.
  • We will see to it that not all discussions or talks focus on the child's illness. It is important to express our fears and feelings, but look for the most appropriate moment. The professional who can help us here is called a psycho-oncologist.
  • It is fundamental to look for moments of rest and to strive for pleasant activities with the family. Giving the best of us to our children will improve the mood of all.
  • As far as possible, it is very important that daily activities are maintained: work, school, social relations and hobbies. Do not forget that life is not limited to the hospital, because the stay in it will only be a temporary situation.
