Frogfish - Sargassum anglerfish or Histrio histrio

Histrio histrio is a frogfish leaving close to the surface among floating objects like seaweed, so rarely seen by divers.

  • Massive and globular body up to 20 cm
  • 1st dorsal spine differentiated into a fishing filament
  • Illicium thin and shorter than the 2nd backbone
  • Globular lure
  • Pectoral and pelvic fins in the form of paws
  • Very wide mouth

This species has been seen in Cottonii seaweed culture in Indonesia.
