What is ASO and why every mobile app needs it

in marketing •  7 years ago

So you've built an app. Congratulations! Now comes the tough part - getting people to find and download it. Sure, you can throw money on app install ads and invest a bunch of time trying to get your userbase to grow organically. But none of that means anything if your app can't be found on the app store, and/or if its page in the app store is not attractive enough to get people to download and install.

Enter ASO

ASO, short for app store optimization, is the mobile app cousin of SEO (search engine optimization). Except it holds another crucial component: conversion. App store optimization is a process that includes a lot of research, quite a bit of playing with spreadsheets and TONS of creativity. Its result: organic userbase growth and higher ROI on your ad budget. Both are not easy to achieve in today's competitive mobile apps arena.

Part 1: Getting found

A quarter of app downloads originate in the app store search engine. People search for apps using the app name or keywords related to whatever it is they seek.

There are differences in the way Google and Apple index apps in their markets. While Google is an expert in indexing and search result display algorithms, Apple iTunes is still figuring things out, and demanding developers enter keywords when publishing their app.

With both markets, selecting the right keywords to put in the title, keyword field (with iTunes), short description and the long one - it's important to take the time and research the keywords to target in each.

Part 2: Getting picked

The average user spends about 7 seconds deciding if your app is worthy of downloading or not. What makes them decide?

Screenshots

Don't just upload simple captures from the app, but use the images to deliver as much information as you can about the app features and advantages for the users.

Here's an example:

Video preview

Just as important as the screenshots, but less often viewed.

Ranking

Low ranks are bound to drive away new users. Do your best to keep those ratings up by replying to user rating comments and improving your app to address their concerns and issues.

Description

Only a small percentage of users will bother to read your app description. Regardless, it needs to be well written and professional in case they do.

Don't spare words and add as much text as you can, including the relevant keywords. Don't spam, and try to make it fun.

A good example is a client I worked with - the official Reddit app. If you know my writing, you might notice that special techslutty touch in places. :)

The bottom line

Some app marketers neglect ASO in favor of install ad campaigns. Having worked with some major brands and having seen the results of well-executed ASO combined with smart advertising my advice to you is to invest in ASO first, and advertising second. Because bringing users to a page that doesn't create downloads is a sad waste of your app's marketing budget.

This is a poster with a relatively small number of followers and the post only has a $30 payout. We're it ever at a place of less than 1 view per $ payout I think it's completely fine. The money drives viewers and for smaller bloggers it's the only way they can get noticed.

The "boosted" payout is still with in the realm of normal. There are many many posters with large followerships receiving much much more for much much less.

Honestly? Not this particular post. The only reason it has such a high payout in such a short time on it is because I was testing out the MB whitelist megaupvotes on it and boosted it with an 11 SBD send. This is actually a "meh" post I would normally get paid 20 cents a word to write elsewhere. I am still experimenting. I don't MB all my posts. Only ones I really want to promote to a larger audience.

I welcome you to read some of my recent short stories, and tell me if you think the payout on them is higher than their quality.

Cheers!

Yep, this is exactly why @minnowbooster is going to face the fate it is. Who needs a fucking MB "megaupvote"? NOBODY.

And when I start flagging the shit out of EVERY post that gets one, NOBODY is going to use the service. ENJOY!!!

So you have no alternatives to the current situation, you sabotage any community attempt to correct it and attack anyone who questions your tactics. Riiiiight. I wonder if the mute button works both ways. I don't need your kind of violent negativity in my feed.
If you're not part of the solution (which you obviously aren't) you are part of the problem.
Enjoy your self upvoted comments. It's not at all pathetic.

Enjoy your dying platform. I am leaving it to you and your useless kind. I assume 4chan and youtube comments weren't doing it for your bully ego anymore, so here you are, terrorizing anyone who disagrees with you. You make me sick.

Keep wasting your money on those votes. I'll be sure to remove the rewards right at the last moment.

Very nice, its a new phrase for me. I think that apps that requires minimal permissions is also an important factor.

That's less ASO and more product design. It's not only about asking for minimal permissions, but also about explaining to the user when and how these are used. There's a whole theory about it. :)

Very good I have often wonderd how to best get my app in front of people before I thought it would just drown with all the so has put me off but your advice is great and now I am inspierd to get on with my app {its a dating app with a twist by the way} Thanks again Techslut.

Dating app with a twist? Sounds interesting. Let me know if I can help. :)

@neltecsoft - That makes at least two of us working on a dating app with a twist :D
Is yours based on blockchain at all? I probably would have if I had know about it before I started designing :(

Thanks for the advice. It's valuable to have this compiled so neatly into one place. I experienced consultants charging more for less expertise and experience. Thanks.

I charge less for more because I can afford to. You can get in touch with me on Facebook - Ilana Brudo. I will be happy to help!

Sage advice. It certainly confirms to my own experiences as a user in the app store.
