Greetings friends of Steemit.
Thank you for visiting my blog and Continuing with the series of properties and benefits of fruits and vegetables, today I bring you information about:
Asparagus is a perennial herb plant that belongs to the liliaceae family. Its botanical name is Asparagus officinalis. It is native to Asia, they have roots that produce flaky buds.
They belong to the same family as garlic, with the difference that these are rich in chlorophyll, which gives them the typical green color and interesting properties for our body. Let's see some of the properties that I could collect in this opportunity.
Great source of antioxidants:
Asparagus has a good antioxidant content. These compounds have health effects. In particular, they counteract the harmful effects of free radicals and, therefore, oxidative stress. The latter condition, according to studies, may be the cause of chronic inflammation and several serious pathologies, such as tumors.
Among the antioxidant compounds present in this vegetable are vitamins C and E, flavonoids, polyphenols, quercetin and glutanion.
Diabetes:
The anti-inflammatory nutrients present in the root help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including diabetes 2. This property is attributed to the presence of chromium, an essential mineral for regulating blood sugar levels. Some studies show the effective of this mineral to regulate sugar levels and improve insulin secretion.
Facilitate digestion:
They are rich in fiber, their intake facilitates the digestive process. This vegetable is a good source of insoluble fibers that increase stool volume and promote correct bowel movements. They also contain a small amount of soluble fiber. The latter feeds the good bacteria of the intestine, for the benefit of the intestinal flora.
Heart health:
Given their high potassium content, they are a very useful food for the heart and muscles in general. They are also low in calories and provide a balanced amount of vitamins and minerals to the body. These compounds are almost indispensable for the proper functioning of the nervous system and the heart. Asparagus roots are used to benefit the heart, eliminating water that stagnates in the various tissues due to the weakness of cardiac activity.
Blood pressure:
Asparagus is a great source of potassium, according to studies, increasing potassium intake and reducing salt intake is an effective way to reduce blood pressure. Potassium relaxes the walls of blood vessels by increasing blood flow. It also promotes the expulsion of salt through the urine. These properties favor the decrease in blood pressure.
Diuretic properties:
Its diuretic properties are worthy of consideration due to the very high potassium / nitrogen and asparagine ratio. The latter is responsible for the strong smell that is felt in the urine after eating asparagus. The best method to take them, in order to improve their diuretic properties, is by decoction.
Anticancer:
Asparagus contains inulin, a substance that humans do not digest easily and, therefore, is intact in the large intestine. Inulin helps the body absorb nutrients better and reduce the risk of colon cancer. In addition, the presence of its high antioxidant content plays a preventive role against certain types of cancer.
Menstrual syndrome:
An asparagus extract can be used effectively to reduce premenstrual swelling. The essential nutrients present in the plant help fight fatigue and reduce menstrual cramps. In addition to these benefits, asparagus also helps control blood loss and maintain hormonal balance during the menstrual cycle.
Pregnancy:
They have a good folate content. This compound is very useful for pregnant women, due to the folic acid of these plants, its action prevents neural tube defects of the fetus and reduces the risk of low birth weight. This root is also considered galactogenic, which means that it stimulates milk production in new mothers.
Anti-inflammatory properties:
Due to its kaempferol, asparagus has anti-inflammatory properties. The combination of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substances. They are one of the best risk reducers for the most common chronic diseases. For example, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Rheumatoid arthritis:
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition that causes inflammation of the joints. Consuming foods rich in folic acid such as asparagus can relieve pain and malfunction of the body in relation to arthritis. These vegetables also have anti-inflammatory properties due to their saponin content and the presence of quercetin, these are useful for the treatment of this disease.
Anti-aging:
Thanks to its high content of antioxidant substances, it slows the aging process. Antioxidants counteract the activity of free radicals by counteracting aging.
Protect the skin:
Asparagus contains antioxidants such as glutathione that is known for its ability to protect the skin from the elements, pollution and sunlight.
Lose weight:
Thanks to its high fiber content called inulin and its low caloric content, it is ideal for diets, in this way it helps to lose weight and also the fiber gives the feeling of satiety, therefore you will not feel like eating for some time.
Good for the mood:
Asparagus contains good amounts of tryptophan, which is the precursor of serotonin, a hormone responsible for humor.
Once they are collected, they can be kept out of the refrigerator for 1 day and 4 to 7 days in the refrigerator. For the refrigerator, it would be ideal to wrap them in a damp cloth to prolong the preservation for a few days.
If you want to make sure you buy fresh asparagus, always look at their sprouts. If they are perfectly closed and compact, the asparagus is fresh.
The ideal intake of asparagus is to grate the tips of the raw sprouts and consume them with several salads. The properties of its juice extracted by electric centrifuge are also excellent.
The best way to preserve their nutritional characteristics is to eat them raw, cut them into small slices and eat them simply with oil, lemon juice and salt or add them to the salad. However, the raw taste is very strong. If you want to eat them cooked, the ideal thing would be to steam them for a few minutes
They are also delicious boiled and seasoned with olive oil, lemon and salt. They are also used as ingredients in tortillas, risottos and soups. Asparagus creams are my favorites.
- The same positive diuretic properties can have excessively energetic effects. They can be irritating to those who have problems derived from cystitis, stones, joint rheumatism.
- The richness of purines makes asparagus not recommended for people with gout problems.
- It is not recommended to take it too late or at night for those who They have trouble sleeping.
- They can create allergic reactions in people who are already allergic to onions, leeks and other vegetables belonging to the Liliáceas family.
- Asparagus contains a carbohydrate known as raffinose. For its digestion, the body must first ferment it. During this process, intestinal gas may form with episodes of flatulence.

Our family loves asparagus. Didn't know it was part of the same family as garlic, huh.

That's right, because asparagus is from the liliaceas family, and garlic, onions and leeks are liliaceas. (I left you a message).
