We are freshman here, and want to introduce ourselves.
We are Pasha and Tanya, we like music and meeting new people around the world, so we are international couple in different aspects😅😉.
Firstly, and very simple fact, that we love travelling.
Secondly, and interesting story, that Paul is from Germany, I am from Kazakhstan, and we’ve met in China and after 6 months together travelled in Indonesia and Malaysia. It’s a long story, maybe we will tell it later, but for now we were thinking what useful information is needed and decided to describe steps how to marry in Denmark.

WHY DENMARK?
Marriage in Denmark is probably the easiest and quickest in the EU. Minimum of documents is needed.
There are a lot of agencies, which offer help with organizing process of applying documents, but usually it cost quite a lot, around 300-700 euro, and in reality it’s much easier that it seems from the first sight. Everyone who can use internet and websites can do it by themselves.
CAN ANYONE GET MARRIED IN DENMARK?
Legal age for marriage is 18 years for both men and women all over the world with doesn’t matter what citizenships. While reeding information about wedding in Denmark I have found, that most of couples are going to Denmark, if one has citizenship of EU country and partner is from another continent.
WHAT STEPS ARE REQUIRED?
- You must apply for a Certificate of marital status at the website of Agency of Family Law (familieretshuset.dk) You must either apply for a certificate of marital status from the Agency of Family Law or the municipality.
Where you should apply depends on both of your nationalities or your basis for residence in Denmark. (at the website Agency of Family Law you can check all details such as: Conditions for getting married in Denmark
Requirements for documents and the translation and so on)
Before applying you should prepare these documents and information:
- The name, mobile number and e-mail of your partner.
- Your passport or ID card – you are required to attach pictures of all sides of your passport, including the front and back page
- If you are a foreign national and are subject to immigration control: • If you’re from outside the EEA or Switzerland – a visa or a residence permit • If you’re from the EEA – a EU residence document / Permanent residence permit
- A marital status certificate if you have not been married before - copy of the original document with a translation in either English or German.
- If you are living abroad: A certificate of registration with a translation in either English or German.
- If you have a child / children together: The birth certificate / the birth certificates of your children. Please make sure attach a copy of the original document(s) along with a translation in either English or German.
When you wish to get married, you must send an application – a notice of marriage – to the Agency of Family Law and pay a fee of DKK 1650.
If the conditions are met, you will get a certificate of marital status or marriage certificate depending on whether you want the marriage to be performed in Denmark or abroad.
A certificate of marital status/marriage certificate is valid for 4 months from the date of issuance.
If you are not married within this time period, the certificate is no longer valid and you must re-apply. When re-applying, you must re-submit all the documents and pay a new fee of DKK 1650.
The Agency of Family Law offers three options for payment of fees:
- You can pay the fee when completing the digital application form with notice of marriage. This payment method is the fastest way to commence your application – the payment of the fee takes place at the same time as you sign and submit the application. You should therefore have your payment card ready when you are completing your application.
- You can also pay the fee via your bank. The amount is to be deposited in our account with Danske Bank: Reg.no.: 0216 - account no.: 4069217060. Remember to state your CPR number or your name and passport/ID number when making the payment. Otherwise, we will be unable to see what application the fee is associated with.
- If you have a foreign bank and will be paying a fee to the Agency of Family Law, you must use the following information: IBAN: DK91 0216 4069 2170 60. BIC/SWIFT: DABADKKK. Remember to state your CPR number or your name and passport/ID number when making the payment. Otherwise, we will be unable to see what application the fee is associated with.
The Agency of Family Law does not accept cash or cheque.
After getting a certificate of marital status you should choose Kommune. Our choice is Tønder Kommune (toender.dk), because it is the nearest Kommune to Germany. And we don’t regret about this, because service in this Kommune is simple, quick and clear.
